Reading, am, Room 3343 New Westminster Campus Dr. Alison Thomas: Scholarly Activity Funding is in the cards. Scholarly Activity Funds help College employees stay current If Dr. Alison Thomas wants to get some Scholarly Activity Funding this time around, she'll have to play her cards right. Fortunately, the Sociology instructor has had plenty of practice in doing just that. Thomas received a grant from the fund last year, enabling her to fly to the United Kingdom to present her findings in a major study into sexual harassment policies in universities and colleges at a conference on gender equality in post- secondary education. “This was my first opportunity to go back to the UK and it was nice to be able to follow up on that because it was a comparative study between universities in Canada and Britain,” says Thomas. “It also gave me a chance to speak at an international conference.” The Scholarly Activity Fund helps College employees remain current and actively engaged in their scholarly communities. It provides funds to assist with writing grant proposals, research and the dissemination of scholarship through the publication or presentation of papers. The scholarship recognized by the College ranges from academic research to the scholarship of teaching. As the February ts deadline for applications for funding neared, Thomas was planning a comparative analysis of both Mothers’ Day and Father's Day cards with Dr. Elizabeth Dennis (Sociology, University-College of the Fraser Valley). They'll explore the range of contemporary representations of mothers and fathers and the extent to which these sustain “traditional” gender stereotypes. Reunion of Pearls contributors 4-6pm, Amelia Douglas Gallery February 23 Noon at New West presents Student Showcase Recital 12:30pm, Performing Arts Theatre A grant from the College Scholarly Activity Fund would give Thomas some of the logistic support she'll need. But it’s not just the prospect of some funding that prompts her to apply. She feels research makes her a better instructor. “Tt connects you to the work at a different level,” she says. “One of the things I learned is that small-scale things are worthwhile doing. You can get something meaningful out of them, they're often fun to do, they connect to your teaching and they enable you to feel like youre contributing to a research community.” Newly selected Scholarly Activity Coordinator for 2005- 06 Tom Whalley agrees. "The promotion of scholarly activity at the college arises, in large part, from the conviction that it does connect instructors to their work ‘at another level’ and in turn, enriches classroom teaching,” says Whalley. “Some $40,000 annually is made available to support these activities. The application process is not onerous and I urge people to look to the fund for possible financial assistance with scholarly projects.” Completed applications should be sent to the Office of the Vice President, Education, Room 4900, NWC, by February 15, February 23 Literature Alive presents Writer-in-Residence, Stephanie Bolster Reading, 12pm, Room 1808 New Westminster Campus February 24.
