| Page 6 = March 11, 1987 Orther Press -—Orther Sports—— Royals kick ass! | By Veronica Blok 14-0. _ That is the current win loss record of the Douglas College Royals Mens _ Basketball team. The Royals swept a _ three day, three game road trip this _ past week-end against Selkirk and _ Cariboo. | Friday’s game against Selkirk saw a rather tired bunch of Royals | beat their hosts 101-55. | “We came off a 6 1/2 hour drive. | We were pretty tired,” said Royal Andrew Conway. The Royals managed to score over a hundred points when a were feeling tired. Not too many teams accomplish that without a little help, wouldn’t you say? | “The competition wasn’t too threatening, so there wasn’t that much of a problem!” said Conway. _ The Royals second game against | Selkirk, on Saturday, was a little | more lively. The Royals weren’t tired, though that really couldn’t be considered a factor in their win, looking at the previous night’s score. In -any case, the Royals crushed Selkirk 129 - 63. The one thing the Royals did not manage to do was stop the Selkirk Saints scoring sensation from set- ting a team record. Saint’s Ray Branch exploded for 39 points in Saturday’s game to reach 1000 points in 27 games. Royals Head Coach Steve Beauchamp conceded that the Saints are in a rebuilding stage at the mo- ment. Sunday’s game against Cariboo provided a bit more of a challenge for the Royals. Royals coach Beauchamp expressed concern that his team would not perform up to par due to all the travelling. “Cariboo is a tough team,” he said “last time we beat them in overtime.” Both teams came out playing hard from the start. The Royals were down by eight points at the end of the first half. After the usual rousing and this time fiery half-time speech by coach Beauchamp, the Royals came back to win the game 84 to 67. Top point scorers for the Royals were Randy Stephens with 28 points, and Andrew Conway and Glen Cote with 18 points each. The Royals have just one more league game to play. They will take on Malaspina College this week. As of press time, the Royals are still on probation in the Totem League. There may be a chance that the probation will be lifted. If that happens the Royals will play in the Totem Conference Championships. If not, then the Royals will finish the season ranked number one, unoffi- cially. ( Note: Pity the team that eventu- ally wins the Totem league Championship with the Royals on probation, and therefore unable to play. Picture this conversation taking place between coaches, player, and fans: “Yeah, they won, but....”.) Keep on slammin’ | By Veronica Blok “Cariboo doesn’t resemble a layoff team.” Such is the opinion | of Richard Norman, Head Coach. | of the Douglas College Women’s | Basketball team. The Cariboo Gold Rush are ranked 4th in Totem | League standings. The Royals beat | the “Rush” in two games this past weekend. “Everyone came out flying in the first game,” said coach Norman. the Other Publications BOCIEy. | “The team had a purpose - a point to make.” Because of the Totem League’s decision to put both of Douglas College’s Basketball teams on probation the Royals are not coun- ted in league standings. If the Royals were to be included in the standings, the women’s’ team would be in first place, and Cariboo would be knocked out of 4th place. Kim Phipps came up big for the Royals in the first game against Cariboo, on Saturday, March 7th. Phipps added 27 points in the Royal’s 104-43 thrashing of the Cariboo Gold Rush. Game two was a pleasant Sun- day afternoon romp for the Royals. They beat Cariboo 69 - 38. Sharlene Jefferson seemed to enjoy the afternoon. She scored 24 points for the Royals. The Royals have a 11-1 win-loss record in Totem League games. hs ho he Stars By Feldon the Astrologer Aries March 21 - April 19 Feeling refreshed and invigorated aren’t you Aries?
