douglas college Inter Office Memo Date: __February 19, 1987. To: From: Re: DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD W.L. DAY PRESIDENT'S REPORT External Matters - Municipal Discussions have been occurring with the First Capital City Development Company, regarding parking arrangements in the downtown area, for Douglas College personnel and students. The Downtown New Westminster Association is concerned with the same subject, but with reference to the downtown business community and the redevelopment of the inner-city area. I am maintaining my position on the Board of Directors of that Association, in order to ensure that College interests are represented and also that the College is able to offer assistance as a community partner. Today, February 19, I had the pleasure of speaking to the Maple Ridge Chamber of Commerce, in order to update them on the development of the College, in Maple Ridge. The Chamber seemed to be highly supportive of the present agreement with Maple Ridge, with joint use of facilities, joint programming for adult education, and the development of some integrated programs. External Matters - Education On January 26th, the Business Council of B.C. ad hoc committee on Educational Relationships wound up its activities. As a result of this committee's work, I expect to see a number of informal gatherings over the next few months, involving College personnel and representatives of the small business community in our region. During the month, there was the regular meeting of the Council of Principals, at which time the proposed review of the existing funding formula, together with a reorganization of the Ministry of Advanced Education & Job Training were central topics. On January 28th, we were visited by Norman Henderson, formerly a senior official with CEIC, and latterly with Vancouver Community College. Mr. Henderson is interested in involving Douglas College as one of a number of "“linchpin" institutions which would deal with the increasing traffic in visitors from the Pacific Rim to the Lower Mainland.
