INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / FEBRUARY 21, 1989 Home of Captain William Irving to be Restored The home of pioneer river- boat captain William Irving is about to undergo a sensitive heritage facelift. The home, which dates from the early 1860’s, was preserved through the efforts of the Native Sons and Native Daughters of B.C., Posts No. 4, New Westminster, and has been open to the public as the city’s His- toric Centre since 1950. It is now governed by a Board of Trustees. This restoration project will be the first ever undertaken on Irving House, which has been preserved and maintained, but never restored. Features to watch for are the reconstruction of the front balcony to its original full length, reinstalla- tion of an awning over the back stairs, and general stabilization of much of the architectural detail. This project was made pos- sible in part by a grant of $45,265, just received from the College Education Committee Call for Nominations Faculty at Large Member The College Education Com- mittee is the senior educational committee at Douglas College.
