A combination of classical and contemporary dance is the Judith Marcuse Dance Ensemble's forte, and their first lower mainland tour will premiére at the New Westminster campus of Douglas College on Friday, February 28. The program will include music ranging from the classical to Aretha Franklin, and Spanish tradi- tional to original jazz works of Kirk Nurock. In total, the ensemble will perform for 90 minutes. "We try to hit everything from what people expect, to stuff that is more off the wall," Marcuse says. "A particularly fun piece will be the Canadian premiéreof our original number, ‘A Tango, Two Waltzes and the Blues’." The ensemble is made up of five well known Canadian dancers, including Shacha Belinsky, former principal dancer for Les Grands Ballets Canadienne, Arron Schields, of the Karen Jamieson Dance Company, Joe Laughlin former Canadian Tumblingteam member, Betsy Carson of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Mary-Louis Albert of the Anna Wyman troupe. Judith Marcuse, artistic director of the ensemble, is one of Canada's most celebrated choreogapher/ dancers, and winner of the 1976 Chalmers Award and the 1979 Clefford E. Lee Award. Her work has received performances in Holland England, the United States, Israel, and a tour to remount a new project in Portugal this spring. The Judith Marcuse Dance Ensemble will perform at the Douglas College Performance Theatre at 8:00 P.M., Friday, February 28.
