King Orchestra, accenting his by- now-so-familiar gratitude of audience appreciation with little bursts of sustain from Lucille. The band rolled into his . stafdard opener, and amid shouts and cheers B.B. sang; “Everyday | Have the Blues.. He looked good. He and his sidemen in three-piece suits, King with his leopard- skin guitar strap, and his personal brand of the blues; done so casually, refined after so many years on the Mississipi Delta, when his opening statement may have been a little closer to home. Riley B. King is a master in his field, but he still remem- bers the pioneers he looked up to; ‘Blind’ Lemon, Elmore James, ‘T-Bone’ Walker. The recent commercial suc- cess of blues-oriented music tends to make people forget that the old pros have been doing it for years, and seeing B.B. in action is an indica- tion as to where some of the newer stars owe their inspir~ ation. They had come to hear the blues from a man who hopefully wasn’t so blue anymore, but who could still perform with the soul borne out of hard times. When he sang, ‘‘l think I’m: gonna give up living...and go shop- ping instead...To get me a tombstone...and pronounce myself dead...’’, you knew that even B.B. King gets depressed, which is basically how the blues originated. But he had us cheering THE OTHER PRESS too; the ladies when he rambled through his paten- ted talking/story blues (usu- ally all about love and ladies and the things they do...), and the male audience when he hammered and carressed Lucille. He had the crowd singing along by the second song, and featured a female vocalist, Deborah Boston, for ‘| Just Can’t Leave Your Love Alone’. The set was about an hour and a half, and King got the expected standing ovation, playing ‘The Thrill is Gone’ Thursday, February 16, 1984. B.B. : King of the Blues for his encore. He. didn’t return to the stage after this, despite audience encourage- ment. Even though he can’t sing and play at the same time, if you missed him, you ~> missed a legend. Duran Duran-GoodGoo Have you ever seen the old Ed Sullivan shows with the Beatles or the Stones on them, and watched the girls by NETTIE BOULANGER screec roug e entire songs? Unfortunately that’s what it was like trying to hear Duran Duran at the Coliseum, which marred an otherwise excellent concert on February ‘st. The average age of the audience was 15 years or under, and it was about 90 percent female; so you can see where all the screaming came from. They had four extra musicians with them, a percussionist, saxaphonist, and two female vocalists. All of them appeared in D/D’s last 2 albums, and all were excellent at what they do. They opened* with Is There Something | Should Know, and went on tod do Hungry Like The Wolf, Union Of The Snake, My Own Way, The Chauffeur (done even better than on the record), The Reflex, Careless Memories, Planet Earth, plus other. Despite their reputation for being snobby, there was no songs.. evidence of it while they BEATA RET TM played or talked to the audience. | For the two. encores they played Rio, and then an extended version of Girls on Film, where Simon Le Bon introduced the Audience to everyone on stage and John and Andy Taylor (no rela- tion) Chuck-Berryed across the stage a few times. The sound was quite good (for the Coliseum, that is) and the light’ show was very good except they hardly used it, but | suppose the majority of the audience came to stare at the band, so why waste the money? My ears were ringing, my throat was sore, (from yelling in-between songs) and | was tired so it must have been a_ good concert. The back-up band, Ima- ges in Vogue, were alright musically, but personally the lead singer was making me sick. Guys that wear pink overalls and wiggle their bum at the audience, | don’t find entertaining. Al- most everyone seemed to enjoy it, though, so maybe I’m weird. | think Simon Le Bon could show him a thing. or hundred.
