Dalcanale named coach of year, takes team to finals The close of February was double-good for Douglas College Women’s Volleyball coach Dave Dalcanale. Just days after learning he had been selected BCCAA Coach of the Year, Dalcanale’s team captured the B.C. championship with a 15-13, 10-15, 5-15, 15-5, 15-6 victory over the Malaspina Mariners in Kelowna on February 25. The performance marked the second time the team had reached the championship round in Dalcanale’s eight seasons as coach, and the first time his team had won the gold medal. Helping lead the way in the Royals triumph was All-Canadian Sasha Klunder, who was selected as tournament MVP. Dave Dalcanale, Doulgas College Women’s Volleyball coach, was named B.C.C.A.A. Coach of the Year for 1994/95 by his coaching peers around the province in February. For Dalcanale, winning the title was especially satisfying after last-season’s 17-1 Royals team was upset in the championship semifinal. “Tt feels great and I’m so happy for the team, especially for the second-year players who were back from last season,” says Dalcanale, who now leads the Royals to the national championships in Edmonton in March. Elsewhere, the news wasn’t as good in men’s basketball for two-time defending B.C. champions Douglas College. Playing in the semifinal playoff round, the Royals lost a 102-101 double-overtime heartbreaker to the Langara Falcons and then faded 81-67 in the second game to lose the best-of-three series 2-0, In badminton, Douglas College hosted the B.C. playoffs on February 25-26 and took second place behind Malaspina. & Chris looking for workshop hosts Douglas College is hosting the annual Gifted Children’s Association of B.C. conference on May 6, 1995, and Chris Johnson is organizing a ‘College-in-a- Day’ workshop.
