MEMORANDUM March 25, 1988. TO: All College Personnel & Students FROM: M.H. Morfey, Bursar RE: RESTRICTED SMOKING POLICY On Tuesday, March 22nd, the College Management Committee approved changes to the Restricted Smoking Policy. The changes are marked with an asterisk on the attached copy of the amended policy. They become effective on May 1, 1988. The Changes Lt Smoking is no longer permitted in the foyer to the Library - the area where the telephone is provided for the use of the public by the Student Society. The only portion of the Library which remains a "Smoking Permitted" area is the employee lounge #2120. os Faculty and Private Offices are now non-smoking areas. That is, smoking is no longer permitted "at the discretion" of the occupant/occupants. History Since we moved into the building, it has been viewed as "primarily a ‘no smoking’ facility." This has been confirmed twice, via Management Committee and College Board motion. In addition, the administration has received increasing pressure, via formal and informal commentary through the Personnel Office, and through recommendations from the Health & Safety Committee, to make the building entirely non-smoking. While the administration has stopped short of declaring the entire building as non-smoking, it has nevertheless moved, step-by-step, in that direction. The original policy was implemented in 1984, it was revised in 1985, and the new revision becomes effective on May Ist. Each revision is moving one step closer to the goal of a smoke free building. The Future The administration has accepted the health-related concerns of college employees, as expressed to the Personnel Office and the Health & Safety Committee. It iS also aware that across the country, the trend has been toward declaring public buildings smoke free.
