Over 950 people attended the three-day event, held May 1 to 3, breaking last year’s attendance by 150. The fair attracted major local and national employers looking to recruit young workers. Over 30 employers, including the Canadian Forces, London Drugs, and Canada Safeway accepted resumes for current and future job opportunities from participants across the Lower Mainland. ‘The CAVE Employment Resource Centre is a service provided by Douglas College and is a federally funded Service Canada project that provides free job search and career resources to people aged 15 to 30. Math wizards compete at Douglas College High school Math students from New Westminster, Tri-Cities and Maple Ridge competed at the second annual Douglas College Math Department contest on May 3. Colleges across the province host the contest that includes an exam, scavenger hunt and award Briefly The National Magazine Awards (NMA) have short-listed Event author Sheree Ann Frappied in the Personal Journalism category. Frappied’s piece, “Idylwylde Park,” published in Event 35, was one of the two winners of last year’s annual Event Creative Non-Fiction Contest. The NMA winners will be announced on June I5 in Toronto. v This year’s successful Health and Safety Week campus displays generated great interest and prizes were awarded to the following recipients: Liz Narsaiya, Ashley Miller, Jennie Johnson, Donna Lowndes, Aubie Anisef, Mack Madness, Christy McMaster, Marena Karasevich and Ali Tootian. Survival and first aid kits or scent-free baskets were presented to the winners during the May 7 to II event. Phillips’ research focus was on preschooler’s conceptual understanding of their sibling's progressive life limiting illness. ‘The results demonstrated that the children’s understanding focused around the illness process as it related to their own context. v Tad Mcllwraith, Anthropology instructor, successfully defended his PhD dissertation at the University of New Mexico. His dissertation, But We Are Still Native People: Talking About Hunting and History in a Northern Athapaskan Village, was based on Mcllwraith’s research in Iskut, BC on the contemporary significance of hunting as told through the stories of members of the community. v Michael Wilson, Anthropology/Sociology instructor, gave a presentation entitled “Late Pleistocene Bison Antiquus from Orcas Island Washington and Evidence from an Early Postglacial Land Mammal Dispersal Corridor from the Mainland to Vancouver Island” at the May 3 Cordilleran Section meeting of the Geological Society of America, in Bellingham. Vv Thea Berretta, Sociology instructor, had an article published in the inaugural issue of the journal Transformative Dialogues, titled “The Educational Marathon of a New Scholar.” ‘The article focuses the personal reflections of a new educator on the topic of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. v Frank Leonard, History instructor, published “Diplomatic forces of the new railroad: transcontinental terminus entry at Vancouver and Seattle,” in the third series of The Journal of Transport History, Volume 28, Number 1, March 2007. Vv English instructor Susan McCaslin’s latest volume of poetry, Lifting the Stone, will be published by Seraphim Editions in the Fall. McCaslin will be going on tour in Ontario with the book. v Kevin Staley, Mathematics Assistant, and wife Liesl welcomed their seven-pound 14 0z. son, Lucas Victor Jurock Staley, on April 12. Vv Mike Proud, former Comptroller, left the Finance department in May. In September, Stephanie Fraser will replace Proud as Comptroller and Dean Jansen will become Manager/ Accounting Information. In the Registrar’s Office, Jill Cowan moves from permanent ISA to permanent Admissions Officer. Stefanie Carter moves from auxiliary to regular as Information Services Assistant. CFCS welcomes Sandra Mountain who moves from Admissions Officer into a new position as an Instructional Facilitator.
