How the Ryder Cup shakes down -& Sats Vancouver Affiliate signs with Blue Jays By Josh Martin, Sports Editor he Ryder Cup kicks off October first in a heated battle between Team U.S. and Team Europe for an instant classic that will be played out until October third at the Celtic Manor in Wales. Here’s a look at both teams. Team US. Captain — Corey Paven Assistant Captains — Paul Goydos, Tom Lehman, Davis Love III, Jeff S luman Team Members — Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jeff Overtun, Matt Kucher, Stewart Cink, Rickie Fowler, Zach Johnson Team Europe Captain — Colin Montgomerie Assistant Captains — Thomas Bjorn, Darren Clarke, Sergio Garcia, Paul McGinley Team Members — Luke Donald, Ross Fischer, Peter Hanson, Padraig Harrington, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell, Rory Mcllroy, Edoardo Molinari, Francesco Molinari The 2010 U.S. cup team is chosen on the basis of points compiled by the PGA of America. The points system determines the top eight players for the US team and in addition the captain, Corey Paven, selects four players that he would like to play on his team (captain’s picks). For the European selection there is the European Tour system and the official World Golf Rankings point list where players qualify for the team based on their rankings. US captain Paven selected the world’s top ranked player, Tiger Woods, as one of his four wild card picks along with Stewart Cink, Rickie Fowler, and Zach Johnson to join the team and make it a 12 man squad. This will be Woods’ sixth appearance at the Ryder Cup in his career but it is not guaranteed that he will be playing in all of the matches as Paven wants to have the absolutely best team on the course to win the cup. Woods hasn’t won a tournament in over a year which makes him a risky choice to be part of the team in the first place. In his past five appearances at the Ryder Cup, Woods has earned just 11 points from a possible 25. However, Woods has been showing signs of his former self lately on the course which made Paven’s decision much easier. The 14-time major winner missed the US victory two years ago in Valhalla, Europe due to a knee injury. That year the US team had six Ryder Cup rookies with Mahan, Stricker, Boo Weekly, Anthony Kim, Ben Curtis and J.B. Holmes who helped shock the favoured European team for the big win. The European team is favoured once again heading into Wales, so it will be up to the reigning champs to come home with the trophy. The Ryder Cup started in 1927 and is one of the last sporting events where the reward is solely bragging "rights and not prize money. Team US holds an overall 25-10-2 winning record over Europe, however in the past seven cups, Team Europe has won five. Who will crank the heat in October? We will just have to find out. The Vancouver Canadians finished their season claiming a second-half title before being eliminated by first-half winners, the Everett AquaSox. Last month the franchise broke an attendance record of having more than 154, 000 fans packed into Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium. Not only that, but the minor league team also made the playoffs for the first time since the 2005 season. The Canadians were members of the Pacific Coast League from their birth into the 1978 season until the end of the 1999 season, and then were sold and moved to Sacramento. The Northwest Canadians started play the next year under Fred Hermann who brought his team from Oregon to Vancouver. Hermann remained the owner until the 2007 season when local business men Jake Kerr and Jeff Mooney purchased the Canadians and took over bringing a fresh, new start to the franchise. Upgrades were added to Nat Bailey Stadium that included a Diamond Vision video board, an energy efficient lighting system, and overall revamping to the ballpark.
