A Celebration of Excellence Employees, students, Board members and other guests gathered together earlier this year for the inaugural Celebration of Teaching, Learning, Program Innovation and Scholarly Activity. The event was hosted by the VP Education's Office and highlighted the exceptional work and achievements of students and faculty over the past year. Along with recognizing the work of 13 new program development teams, the event showcased examples of scholarly activities supported by the Scholarly Activity Fund and Douglas Development, as well as the work of students and faculty engaged in the teaching and learning process. The celebration provided an opportunity for attendees to gain further insight into the teaching and scholarly activities at Douglas College, and to learn more about newly developed credential programs. “| want to express my sincere appreciation to everyone who took part in organizing and presenting displays at the Celebration of Teaching, Learning, Program Innovation and Scholarly Activity. | hope everyone at Douglas College will keep this event in mind as they engage in activities with students over the next year, and will make plans to display some of these activities at the 2007 celebration," says Jan Lindsay, VP Education. Library Hours Change Effective September 2006 Library hours change to accommodate the new timetable matrix. Hours will be from Monday to Thursday 8am to 9pm, Friday 8am to spm and Saturday 9am to spm. Also in September, a new service offering staff assistance on the second floor of the library at New Westminster. Students can visit the “Ask Me” desk and get assistance in using the catalogue and locating books. Event magazine receives recognition Billeh Nickerson, Editor of Douglas College's Event magazine announced an impressive list of awards, nominations and author achievements that have occurred over the last few months. At the recent National Magazine Awards in Toronto, Event received a Silver medal in the Personal Journalism category for Kaitlin Fontanas Sleeping With the Dead (Event 34/3). The magazine also received an honourable mention in the Fiction category for Kari Strutt’s Skyglass Bastard (Event 34/2). Event also received three nominations at the Western Magazine Awards: in Fiction for both Kari Strutt’s Skyglass Bastard and Deborah Willis’s Traces (Event 34/1); and for best photography portrait for Anne Grant's Woman on a Bench, which was featured on the cover of Event 34/1. In addition to the awards and nominations, And we just received word that Bill Gaston’s Homouring Honey (Event 34/3) has been selected for the upcoming edition of Best Canadian Stories. “T attended this year’s national magazine Awards in Toronto and it was such a pleasure to see our magazine acknowledged alongside iconic magazines such as Saturday Night, Macleans and Chatelaine. I love that our “little magazine” often gives the big guys a run for their money,” says Nickerson. “For many academics and writers, Event magazine is their strongest association with Douglas College. Having our magazine do so well reinforces the college's reputation for supporting quality and nationally acclaimed endeavours.” Student Development Faculty of Commerce and Business Faculty Dean updates Commerce and Business Julie Crothers has accepted the position of Associate Dean in Commerce and Business Administration. Crothers has a Masters of Education and has worked in post-secondary education in Australia and Canada. She has served as the OADM Coordinator for the past six years and is currently the Provincial Chair for the ABT Articulation Committee. Science and Technology Dr. Sandy Vanderburgh has been selected as the new Dean of Science and Technology. Vanderburgh will take on the position of Dean of Science and Technology January 1, 2007. “He brings to Douglas College a wide range of skills and abilities in the areas of teaching, academic leadership and academic research. He is very excited to work with the faculty, staff and students in the Science and Technology Faculty at a time when Douglas College is growing and changing,” says Jan Lindsay, VP Education. Des Wilson will continue as Science and Technology Dean through to the end of December. Faculty of Health Science Faculty of Science and Technology Health Sciences Mia Gordon has agreed to continue in the role of Acting Dean for the fall semester. Dr. Mike Tarko has accepted a four month appointment as Acting Associate Dean. Briefly The 13th annual Microserve golf tournament raised $6,000 for Douglas College Foundation. The money will go into the Microserve Bursary for students in need of financial aid. a ‘The Translink Employer Pass Program (EPP) allows companies to offer cost-reduced annual transit passes to their staff when 25 or more employees are enrolled into the program and committed to it for 12 consecutive months.
