Although they knew they had won the prestigious Program Excellence Award from the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC), the Douglas College’s Self Employment program (SEP) team was not aware of the award’s reputation. The award follows on the heels of the program’ s 11th anniversary, a Douglas College Team Excellence Award win, the graduation of over 2,000 learners, and a staggering 93 percent rate of grads starting new businesses. “This is really a big deal. We had no idea of the size and scope of this award,” says Val Lockyer, SEP’s Assistant Program Manager. “I'm so proud of the program and especially of our graduates who come back to mentor and train current participants. They build more than businesses, they build their own community.” The Douglas College contingent g at the annual conference in Scholarly Activity Coordinator Selected Tom Whalley has been selected as the successful candidate for the Scholarly Activity Coordinator position. This is a two-year appointment beginning September, 2006. This past year the position of Scholarly Activity Coordinator was established when Whalley was appointed to an initial one-year, quarter-time position. “Tom has done an excellent job of establishing the Scholarly Activity Coordinator as a key position within the college. He has provided a great deal of support to College personnel submitting applications to the Scholarly Activity fund and has chaired the Scholarly Activity Fund peer review adjudication committee,” Calgary joined 1,100 participants representing 150 colleges from over 900 communities. “This award really goes to everyone on the SEP team who has spent the last 11 years developing this program. They are absolutely deserving of any and all praise. They are responsible for the evolution of the program and creating an environment that creates graduates who are emissaries of Douglas College.” says Trevor Van Eerden, Associate Director, The Training Group. “SEP, with its program success and reputation, had every chance of capturing an award.
