lfFE ona SEVIE | we SexStyle a expect less to get more A re-cap of sweet successes and devastating dismissals on St. Valentine’s Day By Stephanie Trembath, Life and Style Editor ‘ T alentine’s Day: one of the most highly anticipated days of the year that takes precedent over birthdays, anniversaries, and even . Christmas. While most women will claim that they don’t care, and guys will pretend to disregard the whole event until the last second, the average amount of money spent on Valentine’s Day each year is $50-$110. On February 14 an average of 260 million roses are purchased, 141 million cards are exchanged, and 87 condoms are used per second in North America. Surprisingly enough, the most money spent is not on flowers, chocolate, jewellery, or dinner, instead condoms are the highest ranked purchase on Valentine’s Day with over $10,147,680 spent on condoms alone on February 14. St. Valentine’s...does anyone even know what we are celebrating anymore? While millions of dollars are expended on unnecessary items (excluding condoms from this statement) to prove our undying affection for one another, Valentine’s Day originated from the Christian martyr Saint Valentine. The story goes that St. Valentine was persecuted for not converting to Roman Paganism and before the execution he wrote a short letter to the girl he loved signing it “Your Valentine”. It wasn’t until Geoffrey Chaucer’s time in the Middle Ages that the idea of the “Valentine” was embellished as a symbol of love and romanticism. Today, Valentine’s Day is carried on to symbolize affection for loved ones, but has since expanded so that a simple card or flower is not enough. So my question is, since when did this trivial event that occurred as a 10 me result of a clashing of religious affairs transform into a special day decked out in red-white-pink for women to extend rights over boyfriends? While many lovely lasses are content in successful relationships, the streets are still teeming with women who demand to be treated like a princess for one day with the works; chocolates, roses, jewels, and wine. While there is nothing wrong with this charade, for those who expect and do not receive, V-Day is shattered and reconstructed into a depressing and demoralizing event. The biggest mistake any modern Madame can make on V-day is to expect a grand display of affection; after hearing a number of troubling tales that include a poorly constructed dinner, a boyfriend turning up empty handed, and a fiancée not turning up at all, I think it best that in any situation and relationship, it is best to expect less to get more. The only expectations you should be setting are the expectations on yourself, which goes above and beyond any anniversary or flaky holiday. If for instance, you expect absolutely nothing from your significant other, and you receive nothing, then there are no hard feelings. Likewise, if you expect nothing and receive a small something, you think your significant other is the best and you appreciate the relationship even more. To all the lovely ladies out there, I do think you deserve the best, but your man may not know what your “best” is. Personally, I was happy with kung-fu movies and a bowl of Swedish Berries, but if that’s not enough you need to make your intentions clear next year. Or, come back down to earth, and recognize that this isn’t Cinderella, and save the romance for your birthday or anniversary.
