The Royal court Congratulations to men’s volleyball coach Brian Newman, named Coach of the Year at this year’s Athletics Awards. Cam Secret was named Male Athlete of the Year for his contributions to the men’s volleyball team. Cam, a third-year athlete and team captain, has combined league stats of 76 kills and 7 aces. He is a second team BCCAA All-Star, a first team CCAA All-Star, and gives back to his sport through coaching junior high teams and giving clinics. The Female Athlete of the Year award went to Badminton whiz Julia Chen. Julia is a third-year athlete, a BCCAA and CCAA Gold Medalist, and is ranked number one in Canada in her sport. Big wheels To top off this award-winning sports season, the Douglas College Royals wheelchair basketball team (under coach Tim Frick) nabbed the gold medal in the Canadian finals held at Humber College last month. Board news Board Chair Bob Buzza reports that Carole Nelson of Systems & Computing was the successful staff candidate to replace retiring board member Anne Fenton. Carole will begin her 15-month interim position on June 1. By acclamation, the two successful student candidates were Katrina Lennax and Jaimie McEvoy, who will begin their one-year positions September 1. Shelley’s going shopping Last month’s winner of the 60/40 draw was Shelley Hay of Accounting, who pockets $806.40 while student financial aid increases by $537.60. Luciano leaps on Labour Relations Manager Luciano Anjos has decided to leave the College May 23, moving to a challenging new position with the Community Social Services Employers Association. Hollywood north . . . east The David Lam Campus was buzzing April 29 as film crews swarmed in to shoot scenes for the TV movie Campus Justice. The film, starring Melissa Joan ZONE Hart of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch fame, will be shown on NBC later this year. . . no word so far on cameos by Louie Girotto and Tina Perret of Site Services. OUCH! Working quietly at his desk last month, Music Instructor Tatsuo Hoshina jumped when he heard the crash. But that was nothing compared to the shock of looking up to see a hood and grill nosed right up to his office window. A truck had lost control on Royal Avenue, jumped the sidewalk and rolled down the embankment before coming to a crunching halt against the College. Luckily, neither the driver nor Tatsuo were hurt in this bizarre percussive performance.
