Maple Ridge

Maple Ridge residents will
soon be enjoying their own per-
manent community college.

The Douglas College Board
of Governors endorsed a
proposal January 19 that would
create a new Thomas Haney
Centre campus, near the Telos-
ky Stadium in Maple Ridge.
Funding for land acquisitions
was recently approved by the
B.C. Ministry of Advanced
Education and Job Training.

The Centre will be built on a
14.5-hectare site with coopera-
tion of Douglas College, the
Municipality of Maple Ridge
and School District #42.

The new campus will provide
secondary school, college and
municipal programs and ser-
vices to the community in
response to community needs.

"This is a unique project,
probably the first in Canada
bringing together these three
components (college,
municipality and school dis-
trict),” said Douglas College

 

Board Chairman, Dr. Pauline
Hughes.

"Of course it’s going to make
the dollars available stretch
much further. Each of these
components has certain man-
dates and the sum of the parts is
greater than just their combina-
tion," Hughes said.

While a target-date for open-
ing the new campus has not yet
been determined, the Maple
Ridge School District is hoping
to offer its first programs at the
site in September, 1991.

Endorsement of the project
paves the way for detailed plan-
ning, including architectural
renderings, Hughes said.

The Centre will be unique in
British Columbia because of its
ability to provide services which
are limited by traditional or-
ganizational barriers, said the
endorsed mandate statement.
