Welcome to February, one of the most disagreeable months of the year. The long- awaited Christmas holidays are now long past, the Super Bowl is over, spring and the Easter break are still months away. Fortunately, there is February 14, when love blooms and the price of a dozen long- stemmed roses hits its annual high. To find out more about love and other doings at the College, please read on. Love in the laboratory... An epidemic of engagements has been reported involving instructors in Math and Science. Physics Convenor Jennifer Kirkey tops the list, with a wedding planned for late spring. Following with summer ceremonies are Wesley Snider, who teaches Math and Physics, and Biol- ogy Instructor Shamsa Rahemtullah. Chemistry Instructor Alexandra Templemann will wed next autumn in Ontario. Recycled Valentines... Jean Allan is giving a workshop through Community Programs & Services called Homemade Paper Valentines. She’s show- ing people how to recycle waste paper into cards from Cupid for loved ones. Call 527-5492. Operator continued from page 1 ANE Bolivia on view... World traveller, PIO Writer and person- about-town Jeff McDonald presents a slide show and possibly a short video on Bolivia on Tuesday, March 2 at 12:15 pm in Room 1606. Jeff was involved in development work for five months in the South American country last year. For those who can’t make it, Jeff will reprise the show on Friday, March 5 at 3 pm also in Room 1606. Peacock in the Sun... In case you missed it, and especially if you live in or visit Vancouver's East Side, look up the January 12 edition of the Van- couver Sun for an article by Biology Instructor Adrienne Peacock. The piece makes a very convincing argument in favor of converting the PNE into green- space parkland, pointing out that the West Side has more than triple the East Side’s per-resident green space. Get better soon, Jim... Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to Physics Technician Jim Clogg. Jim suffered a heart attack in early January and will be away from the College for the rest of the semester. "Once at the beginning of a semester, | had a student call me and ask if she had to go to home room on Monday morn- ing," she says. "But more often, I have parents calling me and asking if I can find their son or daughter who is either in the cafeteria or library. Sometimes they call to ask if their child showed up at school today, or if I can tell them what their marks were last semester." Those kinds of calls are a little exasperat- ing, but then Brown occasionally has to deal with irate callers, such as people who haven't got the courses they wanted. There’s not much she can do to help them. "You're the first person they talk to so you get blamed for everything. It makes you want to get up and run." But, for the most part, Brown acknow- ledges that people calling her for help are friendly and courteous. A Karleen II: The Son of Darryl... Best wishes also go out to Darryl Kar- leen and his wife, Jill, upon the birth of their son, Dylan Andrew Karleen. Dylan was born on January 5 and weighed in at a very healthy 9 Ibs., 5 oz. Until recently, Darryl had been a computer repair whiz (and movie buff) at the College before being lured to Kelowna and a job with Okanagan College. Pumping iron... Building Service Worker Christine Unter- thiner is training for the women’s Gold Novice Bodybuilding Contest, held in Vic- toria in April. It’s her second shot at the title, and we wish her the best of luck. If she places in the top three, she goes on to the provincial competition in May. Congrats... To Accounting’s Tina Corbo, who has been promoted to the position of Enroll- ment/Accounting Assistant. Leathernecks pork out... Athletic Director Betty Lou Hayes was bil- leted in Fort Benning, Georgia recently while travelling with Douglas College’s wrestling team to a tournament in Atlan- ta. During her stay, Betty Lou was giving a group of U.S. Marines a hard time about all the chili dogs they were wolfing down for lunch. The Marines replied that they were soon slated to be shipped to Somalia, "so we want to eat all the junk food we can." You're up to date until March! a
