President’s Report Highlights - December I met with the Community Social Service Worker Program Advisory Committee at their November meeting. This was an opportunity for me to be oriented to the work of this broad-based community group. I was particularly interested in hearing a first-hand report of a student’s very positive experience with Prior'Learning Assessment. I have asked the Chair of the Advisory committee to make a presentation to the Education Council about her PLA experience. Myrna Popove, Bill Day, Mark Crozet and I attended a fundraising meeting with the North East sector mayors to request their support for a one-million dollar bursary fund. Mark prepared a crisp and clear presentation, which has led to meetings with all village and city councils over a two-month period. The first of these meetings - with Port Coquitlam City Council - has already occurred. T had the opportunity to meet Mr. Steve Baxter, Vice President, International and Western Regional Manager Jeff Goldstein of Data General. This was an opportunity for a number of College administrators to get reacquainted with senior levels of Data General, and talk about upcoming projects. On Monday, December 11, I met with the Chairs of the College Board Standing Committees and the Chair of the Board to discuss the President’s roles and goals for the upcoming year. We discussed evaluation process in general, and I indicated that I would be initiating a similar evaluation process for the Vice Presidents to assess performance and ensure accountability. A copy of the draft goals will be part of the January College Board agenda. I have been named the Council of Chief Executive Officers’ representative to the Standing Committee on Education Technology (SCOET). The Chair of SCOET, Jim Bizocchi, from Capilano College, has given me a lengthy briefing, and provided me with reading material for further orientation. A short video presentation is being prepared under the guidance of Janet Knowles, Centre 2000, in support of our application for a ‘Career Store’ in Coquitlam. In the film, I am able to stress the College’s commitment to the concept, which will assist youth between 15 and 29 to develop their skills, provide career counselling, and get the education they need.
