INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / SEPTEMBER 26, 1989 Report on Developments in the Community Programs and Services Division Continuing Education Department Bob Kissner Replacement: Lillian Zimmerman has recom- mended that Ms. Adrienne Chan be offered a one-year temporary position to replace Bob. Adrienne was short listed during the initial selection process to find a replace- ment for Rita Chudnovsky. For- tunately Adrienne was still available on short notice and we do not have to cancel any of the cour- ses programmed for the fall semester. Adrienne has worked at Camosun College as a programmer and was involved with Bobbie Boehm in the production of an Open Learning program about our Consumer & Job Preparation pro- gram. For the past year she has worked as a programmer with the New Westminster School District and was a partner with Jennifer Ed- wards when we offered Desktop Publishing last spring. I have recommended to the President and he has agreed to the continuation of the position of Chair, Continuing Education fora one year period to August 31, 1990. Further, Lillian Zimmerman will continue as Chair for that period. Douglas College has received two contracts for work in the field of drug and alcohol abuse preven- tion. These contracts will enable the Counselling Department (Everett Robinson) to provide self help services to college students ($15,000) and the Continuing Education Department to provide short term professional training for practitioners in conjunction with Fraser Valley College ($18,420). Consumer and Job Preparation The Ministry of Social Services and Housing has transferred their contract with the Simon Fraser Society by which four instructional assistants were provided to Douglas College. This has resulted in the establishment of four tem- porary instructional assistant posi- tions. Thor Hienrichs-Wolpert has resigned from the College. He has been replaced by one temporary in- structional assistant. One addition- al instructional position has been filled on a temporary basis, bring- ing the total to six, one additional position over a year ago. One posi- tion is being held vacant pending the slated review of the Colleges A.S.E. programs and services. The new instructional assistants are: Laurie Stewart Catherine Rauk Agata Mauro Jane Fletcher Dougal Hines Sharon Zaluski Following a lengthy selection process a faculty position to replace Chris Jenkins was offered and turned down by a lower mainland resident. Subsequently the position was Offered to a qualified U.S. citizen on a temporary basis. This was also declined. Following con- sultation with the President, I have offered the position on a regular basis to Dr. Patricia Mirenda from the University of Nebraska. Dr. Mirenda has verbally accepted my offer, subject to the necessary Employment & Immigration Canada clearances. She will be join- ing us in January. Coquitlam & Thomas Haney Planning A site acquisition agreement has now been completed by the Municipality, the School District and the present owners. The final cost of the land is subject to a review by the Expropriation Com- pensation Board. Concept plans have been developed and the project architects are now working Focus on Children Symposium with these to produce the first | plans for the building. | October 27 & 28 Peter Greenwood and I met last at the Sheraton Plaza 500 Hotel, Wednesday with Mr. Jim Tonn Vancouver (City Manager) and Mr. Dave Buchanan (Planner) to begin discus- sions regarding the cost and the amount of land to be purchased for our Coquitlam Campus.
