Now, it’s been about as hard as I figured it would be when I entered into the program, but what has been really cool about the field as whole hasn’t just been learning which drugs to administer or which techniques to use in whatever situation. No, the really neat aspect of studying medicine has been the realization that you have to be good at what you do. Really good. There just isn’t a ‘good enough’, and adequate doesn’t cut it. Now, that obviously means that things are much more intense then most jobs or courses you’d take, but I have to say, it’s a good feeling. Even after just a few weeks of study, I’ve realized that I need to be better. I’ve reached a point in this course where I simply can’t accept less than excellence if I ever have a hope of continuing on in medicine. I think that that is a feeling that can correlate to things that I do outside of school though; it’s something that we, all of us, should try and apply to everything we do in our lives. Yes, having the will to try harder across the board, to just be better, takes a lot of work, and the vast majority of the time that means pushing ourselves outside of our regular comfort zones. But maybe that isn’t such a bad thing. After all, it isn’t difficult to see that there’s no shortage of people out there that aren’t satisfied with their lot in life. There are plenty of unhappy people in the world, just average people, who hate their jobs and struggle to find things that they truly enjoy. Well, maybe we need to find fault in ourselves when we reach that point in our lives. Sure, it’s easy to blame others for our mistakes and it certainly isn’t hard to make excuses for why things don’t go well, but you know what, I think that we all need to come to the realization at some point that that just isn’t good enough. Take today in practice for instance. Working on spinal roles, while leading the call I must have ‘killed’ my patient five or six times. At first, it was easy to just blame my partner, but the fact is, I was the lead attendant on the call. It was my fault, and I need to be better. Sure, everyone has different situation in their lives and things are absolutely easier for some then they are for others. But there’s nothing wrong with taking responsibility for your actions and using that as a tool to improve yourself. So start today. Don’t settle for “good enough’. Force yourself to just “be better’, regardless of which aspect of your life you want to work harder in. You'll be surprised at how good it feels. WRITE FOR US!
