_ Nsw: The UN has declared October 7th Children’s Day, a great day to start thinking seriously about those trick-or- treaters headed your way. INside advises you to consider your Hallowe’en candy selection carefully (Belgian chocolates are always a winner) and to make sure you have plenty on hand (left-overs graciously accepted at the office). Don’t forget to sharpen your knives for the Alumni Association’s Great Pumpkin Carving contest on the 30th, and be sure to Monster Mash on over to the Athletics Hallowe’en Party on the 31st. Travel Opens Ears, Eyes After a recent trip to England, Facilities Services’ Jean Allan and spouse hopped over to the island of Leskas, Greece for a little R&R. “It was great,” she says, “except for the one day we awoke at 5 am—in a hotel room just downhill from a swimming pool—to the sounds of an earthquake.” Luckily, the pool—and Jean—held up, even after the five additional quakes that day. CE’s Cathie Cookson visited family in Finland this summer, and while there took in short trips to Sweden, Estonia, and Russia. She reports that the “almost unimaginable” wealth of the czars she saw in St. Petersburg museums “made it clear why there was a revolution in the first place,” and provided a poignant backdrop to the growing social and economic disparities she noted during her Russian travels.
