Canadian Hair Salons Asked to Pay
to Play Music

 

Across the country, hair salons are
being asked to pay for the right to play
music in their businesses. Officials

at SOCAN (the organization that
represents Canadian music composers)
explained in a press release that
notices have recently been sent to hair
salons across the country, ordering
them to pay a licensing fee of $94
dollars or face possible legal action.
Existing legislation has always
required hairdressers pay to play
music CDs, MP3s in public, although
this has traditionally been somewhat
unregulated.

The New Westminster City Council
has rejected a request by Clancy’s Pub
for the addition of an outdoor patio.
Located at the Royal Towers Hotel,
the pub is surrounded by residential
housing, many residents of whom
made their voices heard in letters to
the council. Complaints of noise,
vomiting on the street, urinating on
fences and other public disorders were
listed as common occurances after
hours. In response, the city declined
the pub’s bid. Council member Bill

is having difficulty containing the
behavior of patrons who are in there
now, and what’s it going to be like if
they are outside?”
