Hot royalty The Prince and Princess -of Wales are coming! And there are those of us whose res- ponse is a gentle yawn. | don’t know about you, but I’m much more excited about the Royalty that’s appearingVan- couver this winter, courtesy of Pacific Jazz and Blues. Last month, it was Koko Taylor, the reigning Queen of the Blues, who delivered a Town Pump performance that would blister paint. Backed by one of the hottest bands around, Koko belted out a mix of classics and her own current material. When she sang (in a slightly feminized version of Muddy Water’s M.A.N.]. “‘I could make love to a crocodile,’’ it was one hundred percent believable. But one of the best songs she did wasn’t a blues song, but a soul song, ‘‘I’d rather be blind” by the Queen of Soul, Etta James. By coinci- dence, she is the next Royal personage to appear here, at the Town Pump on Wednes- day. If you missed Koko, you must catch Etta—if you can. The woman is a_ veritable mountain of emotion, a foun- tain of feeling, a volcano of virtuosity,, and generally a one-woman musical cremator- ium. You could fry eggs on the sidewalk outside a hall in which she was_ performing, thats how hot this mama cooks, And, what would a Queen be without a King? The un- disputed Regent of Rythm and Blues, Albert Collins, also makes an appearance at the Pump this month. With all this going on, is it any wonder the temperature around town has been un- seasonably....hot?
