Within two years a new com- puter information system and a compatible telephone registration system will be installed at Douglas College. The new systems will allow earlier registration and infor- mation about course enrolment to aid academic departments. Better information about student trends for program planning and market- ing will also be a feature. “This will result in a very dramatic change in the registration process, as you go from in-person contact to registering by computer, using your phone as a terminal,” said registrar Patricia Angus. “Tele- for Douglas College registering is very significant but in fact, the new information sys- tem will be the greater change for students and staff.” The information system called Banner, produced by SCT (Systems and Computer Technology Corp.) of Philadelphia, will eventually gather and analyze data for registration, billing, student records, academic history and grading. Recruitment and admis- sions functions will be in place by December, while the entire system should be running by October 92. The Periphonics telephone system is designed to work with Banner. Cost for both will be ap- proximately $750,000. Angus said the Periphonics system will be in- stalled once Banner is in place, and its first use is scheduled for April, 93 for summer registration. “We decided to choose a sum- mer semester to help us work any bugs out of the system and get people accustomed to it before the fall,” said Angus. The new systems will also give Douglas College the flexibility to establish earlier registration. “We will open registration much earlier,” said Angus. “This will give students a much better idea of what courses they can get. It will also give the departments Banner continued on page 2 Crowded registration days will be a thing of the past once the new computer and telephone registration systems are in place.
