For Your Benefit - the Library There’s a very good reason why the Douglas College library is officially called the Learning Resource Centre; it’s because, like most modern libraries, it has a lot more to offer than just books. Today’s LRC offers tons of current periodicals, a huge music selection, movies, and a growing number of multimedia CD-ROMs. Whether you want to be entertained or informed, the LRC has features that are yours to enjoy as a Douglas College employee. Name a topic; if Douglas College \ teaches it, the periodical list « has something that applies to — it. Magazines, “a newspapers and journals are 7 i often the best ways of keeping on top of your interests, since they tend to be more up-to-date and topical than books. Current issues have to stay in the library, but back issues are available for sign-out by Douglas College faculty. Want to settle an argument about a news story? The LRC has a full-text Canadian newspaper database which contains the past four years of fifteen newspapers on CD-ROM. It’s easy to use and tough to beat as a source of instant information. For those people who think that too much information is barely enough, the LRC has introduced the new Online Journal Access system, or OJAC. This service allows students, faculty and staff to order articles from journals not carried by Douglas College. Be warned, though: ordering an article that is available at the College results in being charged the full delivery cost. Details on OJAC are available at the library. When it comes to music, people usually agree that compact discs are a big improvement over the old vinyl platters, but they also agree that the enhanced quality comes at a cost. The LRC’s collection of classical music, jazz < G employees can sign out CDs for free, so whether you want specific music for a special occasion (a wedding march, for example), or just want to check out a CD before laying out hard-earned cash for your Own copy, you should swing by the - LRC and give it a listen. As television programming slowly turns into mush, more and more people are tossing their Rogers Cable accounts and spending the money renting movies instead, but Douglas College employees can have their cake and eat it too. According to librarian Jean Cockburn, Douglas College has one of the best video collections of any community college. The selection includes opera, classic dramas like The Great Gatsby and To Killa Mockingbird, and even some workplace videos with John Cleese (which must be seen to be believed). Sly Stallone fans will probably want to hold onto their Blockbuster Video cards, but everyone will find at least a few selections they like. Last but not least, employees who are interested in the new multimedia technology being produced by Microsoft will be glad to know that the LRC is slowly building a collection of CD- ROMs. Presently, the collection includes the Encarta Encyclopedia, the American Sign Language Dictionary, and Microsoft Musical Instruments (among others). Employees can either book a computer in the AV department or just sign out the disc and take it home.
