Changes arent permanent, but change is. —Rush LETTER FROM THE EDITOR My fellow readers: You might be noticing a few changes around the ol’ Other Press this week: new layout, new staff, more colours, fewer writers...it’s all very different. But as I’ve noticed in student press, things tend to change quickly and frequently. Student papers are by nature always in transition, and ours is no different. Even before this week, things have been changing a lot. Over ‘he past year, the entire senior staff of this paper went on to bigger and better things, leaving me, Mark Fisher, and Garth McLennan as the “old guard” of the OP, and that’s why I’m the editor these days. While my predecessor, J.J. McCullough, had to wait around five years to become editor-in-chief (as did his predecessor, Trevor Hargreaves), I’ve only been with the OP for under a year, and just sort of lucked into a time when those with experience were departing, and I was left senior by default (the two sweetest words in the English language! De! Fault! De! Fault!). : With changes in the staff come changes in the paper. That’s no surprise, but you can see a major change in the content in this paper. Mr. Kryzanowski in news is always providing local coverage for the paper, something we struggled to do before his inclusion. Matt keeps it political in the opinions section, and Chloé in arts brings a more diverse spectrum of interests than we’re used to around here. And sports...well, hey, it’s still the same ol’ sports! Nothing wrong with that, though; Garth still keeps _— “Nucks and your Douglas sports (go, Royals!) on straight lock. Another big change over the past year has been the production staff; Brian Yoo, Timothy Arndt, and Shannon MacKay have all lent their talents and aesthetics to improving the look of this paper over the last year. It’s hard to do a complete re-design of a paper like this; we’ve worked with the same design and layout for so long that it’s become familiar, but at the same time, it’s also confining. Even before the re-design, though, Timothy and Shannon have been working well within the confines. Shannon’s been taking a lot of great original photos (look for her in the concourse; you might find yourself in our “Word on the Street” feature!) and Timothy has always been a Photoshop wiz (check out his Yogi Bear in last week’s humour section). If you want to see real change at this paper, just check out our website at www. theotherpress.ca. Before Angela Szczur took over the damn thing, it hadn’t been updated for months, and it had a hideous red, black and white colour scheme that made the whole thing look slightly fascist at first glance. Better still, she’s got our archives from the past few years on the site! You can go to our archives any time you like now, and see what things were like in the crazy days of 2005. Did you know Paul Martin was prime minister once? Those archives are like a mirror to the past... And of course, Shawna Swatez is the new assistant editor, whose job it is to make sure this whole operation doesn’t turn into a terrible mess. After all, if it weren’t for Shawna, i wood make misstakes all the time, but she correx them awl. Mark’s still around, that crazy accountant of ours, and at 28 years old, Mark is the old man of the OP; I know, eh? 28 years old?! Shouldn’t he be retiring by now? But, much like John McCain, Mark has experience. Unlike John McCain, Mark’s experience isn’t in being a batshit crazy old guy. Now, you might think that with all this change going down, we have no more room \ State of the Press for upstart hooligans coming by the OP office and getting involved. Nonsense! We love hooligans (especially those of the upstart variety), and we need people like you to get their hands dirty around here. Come write for us; come tell us what you think; come to even say hi, because it gets ever so lonely in our dungeon at New West. Just make yourself known, because you, yes you are the change we can believe in. | Thank you, and good night! { Your friend in high fidelity, Liam Britten Editor-in-Chief The Other Press it's online! “book swap” Don’t miss out - go on-line today!
