ae eas = DOUGLAS COLLEGE LnsLS ARCHIVES SURREY CRISIS LINE Loneliness, depression, alcoholism and drug abuse are just some of the problems facing callers to Surrey's Crisis Line. Others call to discuss personal turmoil in their family lives or work situations. Trained volunteer counsellors are available 24 hours a day to listen to callers' concerns and to provide referrals when appropriate. At times, experienced counsellors are available to offer short-term counselling. The primary focus of the Crisis Line is to offer a caring and nonjudgmental ear to callers, helping them to explore a problem but not to solve it for them. Volunteers are chosen for their abilities and willingness to learn how to develop skills of caring and listening. A comprehensive group training program for new volunteers is soon to get underway in order to ease a shortage of Crisis Line volunteers. Successful volunteer applicants will go through the training program and subsequently agree to be available for a 3-hour session on the tele- phones per week. Workshops will be run at intervals during the year to in- crease the skills of both new and experienced volunteers. If you care about people's problems and would be able to spend a few hours per week helping them, you are invited to apply for the next training session, beginning soon. Call 584-5811 for an appointment to discuss your application.
