INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / FEBRUARY 14, 1989 Athletic Update HOCKEY: The Royals were blown away Sunday morning (15-3) bya determined BCIT squad who jumped ahead in the standings to second place. Cariboo Col- lege holds down first place and Douglas now sits in third. Goals were from Frank Pakoz- dy, Marc Thiffault, and Pat Mangold. MEN’S BASKETBALL: The men’s basketball team is finally putting it all together and are on an 8-game winning streak. They defeated a weak CBC team Friday night (127- 41), and although starters Glen Cote and Phil Tapley did not dress, Tracey Holloman con- tributed 24 points to the drubbing and Matt Wubs had 19. On Saturday night, the Royals defeated Trinity Western (74- 65) before a packed house of over 300 fans. Trinity holds the number one spot in the Con- ference, so this was an important win. The CCAA Rankings has the Douglas Men’s Basketball Team ranked 8th in Canada. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: The Douglas women defeated Trinity Western (89-70) after leading only 38-34 at the half. The score was tied 54-54 before Andrea Jackson and Ethel Atte combined to take the game out of reach. Both scored 20 points a piece. BCCAA has released its standings for February 6th, and in women’s basketball, Douglas College was number one, with a record of five wins and one loss. Douglas College Women’s Basketball team has also ap- peared in the national (CCAA) rankings for the past three weeks as the number six ranked team among Canadian colleges. Team leaders are third-year players Ethel Atte and Andrea Jackson, and second-year player Claudia Zamprogno. INTRAMURALS: Floor hockey action takes place every Thursday from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. in the gym, and you are invited to watch from the upstairs balcony. The games are shorter this semester (20 minutes), in order to accom- modate 20 of the 23 teams who wanted to play. Stop by and see the action!! Volleyball and badminton nets are set up Tuesdays from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. for drop-in ac- tivity.
