MAPLE RIDGE CENTRE HOLDS OFFICIAL OPENING Tre ublic is invited to drop in at the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Community Education Centre on November 19, to join faculty and students in celebrat- ing the Official Opening of this new consolidated learning con- cept. A one-hour ceremony begins at 4:30 p.m. in the West Gymnasium of Maple Ridge Secondary School at 21911 - 122nd Avenue in Maple Ridge. Among the officials in atten- dance at the ceremonies will be B.C. Minister of Advanced Educa- tion and Job Training Hon. Stanley Hagen, B.C. Minisiter of Education Hon. Anthony Brum- met, and MLAs Mr. Norman Jacobsen and Mr. Austin Pelton. They will be joined on the plat- form by Chairman of the Board of School Trustees Mrs. B. Levens, Chairman of the Douglas College Board Mr. C.J. Murnane, Presi- dent of Douglas College William Day, and Superintendent Denis Therrien. A brief tour of the facilities will follow the formal festivities, and coffee will be served. The Maple Ridge Secondary School, Maple Ridge School Dis- trict Continuing Education, and Douglas College Maple Ridge campus have been operating out of the same building since the beginning of the fall term, ena- bling the Centre to offer rsonalized educational services from basic literacy right through to university transfer. Whether a student goes to Douglas College or the school district, the programs lead to a common end. The Official Opening Ceremony is an opportunity for members of the community to see the new facilities for themselves and find out about the services that are available at the Education Centre. DYNAMIC PIANIST TO PLAY Tt Douglas College "More Great Musicians" se series will present a recital by acclaimed pianist Pawel Checinski, Sunday, November 29, 8:00 p.m. in the Per- formance Theatre. Checinski was born in Poland and began his musical studies at age six. After finishing a Masters degree from the Music Academy of Warsaw, the pianist won a Fullbright Grant to continue his studies at the Juillard School of Music. Since beginning his career outside his native country, he has performed to rave reviews throughout Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia. A technically brilliant pianist who is also known for his dynamism and musical sen- sitivity, Mr. Checinski has been awarded numerous prizes includ- ing the Rachmaninoff Prize and _ the Ravel Centennial Medal. CHAD ALLEN SHARES SONGWRITING SECRETS Gonewriters who need some in- spiration and beginners who think they might like to try songwriting will want to be at Douglas College on Saturday, November 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for a one-day workshop entitled Your Song: Writing a Song in a Day. The course will be taught by Chad Allen, a songwriter, club performer and recording artist who was also one of the founding members of the rock group The Guess Who. Participants will learn valuable methods and techniques of songwriting and by the énd of the day will have written at least ont song in completed form. Workshop members who play instruments are asked to bring them to class, but instrumental ability is not a prerequisite for ad- mission. If you have a song in your heart and want to find out how to get it onto paper or tape, then this is the workshop for you. The course will be held at the College’s New Westminster cam- pus.
