10 TO: DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD March 17, 1988. o= On March 11, the Deans and Bursar had an all day planning meeting, discussing College management and development issues, which will form part of the substance of the Board Retreat to be held next month. Mr. Gary Bunney of the Ministry, paid a visit to the College on March 15, at which time issues of priority were discussed for our next academic year. IT am very happy to announce that the Ministry has recognized our priorities, which resulted from our planning activities of last Spring. The result of this is that the following programs have been recognized for implementation this year, in the following priority order: Second Year Stagecraft Academic Summer School Residential Construction Management Performing Arts Management Consumer & Job Training for Emotionally Disturbed Adults nPwWNe * 8 # ® @ Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing - a matter of high priority for the College and the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Association, has been reserved for separate analysis and discussion. College Foundation planning committees have outlined a series of events for the next two weeks, calculated to increase the endowment for student aid. A great deal of imagination and enthusiasm has gone into the planning of these events. All constituencies - the Student Society, Faculty, Staff, Administration, and Board Members have worked hard and co-operatively on the projects. Internal Matters - General The dominating area of discussion and anxiety at this time, continves to be the state of labour management conflict between the D/KFA and the College. The Mediator, Mr. Vince Ready, is convening a meeting next Thursday evening, March 24, in order to try to resolve the present impasse. A condition of meeting with him is a preparedness to compromise. The College has responded positively to his letter. I look forward to a positive outcome of the meeting. It is a pleasure to inform the Board and the College Community that Mr. Chris Johnson, of the Physical Education Faculty, has been awarded a Certificate of Merit for community contribution by the Government of Canada. I know that we all share.in the appreciation for the contribution that Chris has made to the quality of community life in our region over the past years. WLD/gb
