ae www.theotherpress.ca oe i carrying the ball eight times for a measly 26 yards. Sunday was a great day for BC receivers, as Lulay found many of them, many times, for multiple yardage. Before-mentioned receiver Kierrie Johnson only caught two passes, but for 81 yards and that touchdown, showing that he has potential to be a solid option in the future. Superman Geroy Simon had four catches for 79 yards, and other superstar slot back Arland Bruce, who was brought in for the sole purpose to help the Leos win, caught five passes for 73 yards had defensive player of the year Jovon Johnson in their secondary. Defensive tackle Khalif Mitchell had BC’s only sack and defensive end Jason Vega had Winnipeg’s only one as well. The self- named “Swaggerville,” Winnipeg’s defensive line, struggled to force Lulay out of his comfort zone, and “Mayor” Odell Willis didn’t amount to anything as left tackle Ben Archibald held him off of his quarterback for the most part. The Lion’s defence held strong like they had done for most of the season. Up-and-comer Shawn Gore also had three catches for 18 yards and rookie Marco Iannuzzi had two catches, which didn’t gain all that much yardage, but were difficult catches to make and required concentration. Vancouver native Paris Jackson had two excellent catches for 43 yards, but it most likely just showing off for potential signings for next year. Winnipeg took the opposite approach with their targets, choosing only a primary three to spread the ball around to. Greg Carr had seven catches for 107 yards and a touchdown, Terrence Edwards had six catches for 83 yards and a touchdown, and Corey Watson had three catches for 42 yards. The headlines coming into this week were which team’s defence will be more effective. These teams finished 1-2 in team sacks, and Winnipeg one that was destined for the end zone. Linebackers Solomon Elimimian and Anton McKenzie led the defense with six and four tackles respectively, with McKenzie pulling down an interception in the first quarter. The Lion’s became the first team to start a season at 0-5 and turn it around to win the Grey Cup. And they also look to be in great shape going into next year, if they can re-sign the players they need and foreboding players such as Simon, all- star centre Angus Reid, and head coach/ general manager Wally Buono to walk out on retirement. For Winnipeg, this season was definitely a step in the right direction, as they’ve pulled themselves out of several repeating, sub .500 seasons to be Grey Cup contenders and with another couple additions could represent the Eastern conference next year.
