In 1989, a disturbed man entered I’ecole polytechnique in Montreal and in cold blood shot and killed 14 women, just because they were women. Today, nine years later, women worldwide es to commemorate this tragedy. People were also wearing white ribbons protesting violence against women. ; In New Westminister, fourteen people, members of the DCSS, Women's Centre, College Administration, BC Benefits and regular students read the names of the fourteen women killed and each placed a white rose around the names of the dead. DCSS Athletics Rep, Kelly Semple said, “These fourteen women were slain just because they were women. One deranged man decided that they shouldn't be around. It touches you to realize that this could happen to any one of us.” She added, “[Reading the names of the dead women] ... touches the men a little bit deeper than the women because men have been bashed, that all men are evil and that’s not what they are.” Semple also said, “People are more aware [of violence against women since 1989]. It is not [just] violence against women. It is vio- lence against men and children. That is why we had male and female presen- ters.” After they read the names, there was a moment of silence for the women killed in Montreal. e remembers the women killed in Montreal remember and work together to end violence against women and children. This day has become more than a remembrance; it has become a day of action, a day of forward thinking and movement. In the student movement we look to achieve a balance, with everyone having equal rights and no one not being able to have their voice heard. This event is being put on today by your student union and we have had opposition to having men participants and presenters. Men are not the enemy. Abusers and murderers are. If we do not lean on each other and depend on each other for support, how can we possibly further the cause? The white ribbons you see some people wearing are for an increasingly strong campaign: Men against violence against C:0 O@.U lot LAM memorial service These are the names of the women killed in Montreal: Genevieve Bergeron, 21 Helene Colgan, 23 Nathalie Croteau, 23 Barbara Daigneault, 22 Anne-Marie Edward, 21 Maud Haviernick, 29 Barbara Maria Klueznik, 31 Maryse Laganiere, 25 Maryse Leclair, 23 Anne-Marie Lemay, 27 Sonia Pelletier, 23 Michele Richard, 21 Annie St-Arneault, 23 Annie Turcotte, 21 women. In less than ten hours some male students sitting at a table collected donations, gave out the white ribbons to men and women and got over 300 signatures from men wanting to end the violence. The more people willing to stand up and say, “no, this will not happen,” the better for all of us and our children. So we welcome everyone—women, men, teens, children—everyone to remember and teach others. Violence against anyone is wrong and it will no longer happen silently. When we take our moment of silence, think of the women that had their lives cut short. Think of the childrea who will never exist. And think of all the lives that we can save by ending all violence.
