New West concourse renovations By Maria Asselin-Roy, Staff Reporter ou may have noticed a new large structure currently being built in the concourse of Douglas College’s New Westminster campus this summer. The renovations are a result of various student and professor feedback over the past few years. Most people agreed to liking the openness of the concourse, but disliked the lack of seating and the cold surfaces of the tile flooring. Once completed, the concourse will be shared with the steel structure, which will be a stage area. It will be equipped with a modern sound system, a small stage used for various events, and nine LCD TV monitors. The stage area will be we shared with a multi purpose building. This can be used as a welcome centre for new students, a student advising area, and an area for students to study and hang out with their peers. Levels three and four are also being renovated with student work stations, which will be powered with LED TV’s for group work. There will also be new comfortable seating overlooking thé concourse. The new flooring currently being installed will be brighter and more comfortable to walk on, and it is designed to absorb sound. The floor is made of rubber and ceramic, and is environmentally friendly. The purpose for all of these exciting renovations is to create a “hub” for student life at Douglas, and will hopefully provide students with an enhanced college atmosphere.
