There’s been lots of attention paid lately to expansion into
Coquitlam at Pinetree Way, but Douglas College is already a multi-
campus institution. The second campus is located at the Thomas

Haney Centre in Maple Ridge.

 

 

 

here is wide recognition of the
importance of partnerships for
Pinetree Way, but it should be noted
that the Thomas Haney Centre was
Douglas College’s first foray into
school district partnerships. Along
with the Maple Ridge School
District, the College planned and
built a joint college and high school at
23000-116 Avenue in Maple Ridge. The
joint facility is the first of its kind in
Canada, and opened in 1992. University
transfer courses, developmental studies,
and continuing education are offered.
Last fall, 577 students took one or
more courses; 43 course sections were
offered. Shared facilities include the

library and cafeteria. Douglas College’s
physical plant includes 10 classrooms, a
computer lab, faculty and staff offices.

If you haven’t been there, it’s a good
idea to visit the Thomas Haney Centre.
The pace is different than the New
Westminster campus, but there’s plenty
going on. One example of that is
Concurrent Studies, a program which
allows grade 12 students from School
District No. 42 to take Douglas College
courses if they qualify. Five students did
that last fall, and one finished with the top
mark in her Psychology course. Another
innovation is the Community Career
Resource Centre, which helps students
and members of the community with

career information and job search skills.

Those are some program highlights,
but it takes a dedicated group of people to
deliver what Douglas College offers at the
Thomas Haney Centre. It’s a smaller
operation, but it’s not divided into
departments, so the range of tasks is
broader for Thomas Haney Centre
employees. Here’s a brief look at who
does what, and a chance to put names to
faces.
