ATHLETIC UPDATE Intramurals It's fun and games this semester as I refuse to offer an activity where people become too competitive. Unless a team practices four times a week, life shouldn't be taken quite so seriously. Nerf Broomball is on the agenda for now and the staff and faculty teams only have seven players. Sign up by contacting Betty Lou (5338) or Steve Sale. This game requires no skills, no particular degree of fitness and certainly no protective equipment. Do come and spectate on Thursdays between 1200 to 1400 hours. Aerobics Aerobics, Slow Stretch and No-Bounce Aerobics are offered at lunch time, Monday thru Thursday, from 1210 to 1250 hours. The weight room is open 0900 to 1900 hours; any of the weight room attendants will be happy to assist you with beginner's programs in weight training. Women's and Men's Basketball The men's and women's basketball teams are back after a ten day sojourn in the sunshine of Hawaii where they played basketball, tanned, rode mopeds, body-surfed, took in the sights and wrote exams. A picture display in the glass bulletin board by the gymnasium shows several sunny Hawaiin sites enjoyed by our students. If you attend any one of our upcoming basketball games, you will see just how brown everyone became in Hawaii. Gerry Della Mattia's office is the present home of the 2nd place trophy brought home by the Douglas College's Women's Basketball team and a 4th place trophy from the men's team. Hawaiin Highlights Mirjana Jurcic, Becky Watson, Al Church and Randy Stevens were selected as tournament All-Stars. Coaches Richard Norman and Mike Garisto spent the entire 10 day cramming their basketball team (and occasionally us) into battered old station wagon to get around the Island. Steve Beauchamp jogged with his team while Jean Gray climbed into volcano craters to take better pictures. However, Kris Remmen took the best pictures of the trip and was also rivaled by all of North America's best general managers, in terms of co-ordinating 40 people on vacation. She even got to the beach twice! Of course how inefficient can a person who works in the Accounting Department be? (Thanks for the help Kris, I know the teams appreciated it as well.) The trip can be summed up in these words, "Where's the tournament going to be held next year?" Douglas College Victories Jan. 17 Douglas Rovals vs. Cariboo Chiets (Men) 113 57 (Women) Douglas Royals vs. Cariboo Gold Rush 89 58 Jan. 18 Douglas Royals vs. Cariboo Chiefs (Men) 110 67 (Women) Douglas Royals vs. Cariboo Gold Rush 90 42 Men's Volleyball This team is ranked 6th in Canada and has heen undefeated in tournament play this year. The team is 9-0 to date, followed by second place VCC who are 6-4. The bleachers were full at their match against VCC last Saturday, and the fans weren't disappointed when Douglas College came up with the big win. Look for them to represent British Columbia atthe National championshi)'s in March. SS SEEN) OS LD
