BCCAA semi-finals, for a best of three series. The Lady Royals, who went into the finals ranked number one, hosted Malaspina for the first game on Friday night. During the first half, Douglas was unable to generate much offense and because of this, the game seemed slow. The score at half-time was 35-29 for Douglas. The second half went at a faster pace, with Douglas being suc- cessful in fouling two of Malaspina’s players out and setting up a sound defense. This obstructed Malaspina’s efforts to gain any ground on the lead developed by Douglas. The Royals went on to win the game, with a score of 73-57. Andrea Jackson had 19 points. On Saturday, the Royals travelled to Nanaimo to take on the Mariners at their home base for the second game in the series. From the begin- ning, the Royals dominated the defensive boards, and on offense they could not be stopped, as their lead increased while Malaspina struggled to stay inthe game. At the half, the score was 50-22 for Douglas. The second half saw the Royals with a determination to end the series strong, with some excellent defense by third-year guard, Ethel Atte, who had three steals and con- tributed 24 points. Andrea Jack- son, a third-year forward, led the forwards by blocking three shots and scoring 28 points. Although the Mariners tried to catch up, it seemed like they were fighting for a lost cause, as the Royals ended the game with 84 points ahead of Cariboo College for the provincial championships, and the following weekend they travel to Grande Prairie for the nationals. MEN’S BASKETBALL The Royals took the semi-finals in two straight games, defeating VCC at Langara on Friday and at home on Saturday. The wins were ex- pected ONLY by Coach Steve Beauchamp and his team, as VCC had beat us twice in league play this year. Nevertheless, after being denied the opportunity to compete in a national championship for the past two years, these wins were par- ticularly sweet. Friday, March 3: Douglas at Langara Half-time Score: 33-32 for Douglas Final Score: 70-61 for Douglas Glen Cote 27 points, Sean Beasley 16 points. On Saturday, March 4, VCC played at Douglas. The game was delayed for 35 minutes while Coach Beauchamp and some of the parents repaired the snap-back rim, which was damaged during warm- up. After gathering all available screwdrivers and wrenches from wherever, the hoop was finally secured (it no longer snapped back), both teams agreed to play on it, and the game started at 8:50 pm. Saturday, March 4- VCC at Douglas Half-time Score: 42-32 for Douglas Final Score: 75-71 for Douglas Glen Cote 18 points, Fred Apolinario and Willis Parnell 13 points each. Douglas advances to the final against TWU.
