A warm invitation Briefs Audit alert Tax time is approaching, and Murray Leslie of Commerce and Business Ad- ministration has passed on a Top-10 List we should all take pretty seriously — the criteria Revenue Canada use in deciding who to audit. “| can promise you that you will not enjoy a tax audit by Revenue Canada,” says Leslie. He adds that the selection of Canadians to undergo such audits occurs in many different ways: tips from disgruntled employees or ex-spouses, random computer printouts, industry-wide ‘projects’ relating to a particular field such as waiters, waitresses, dentists or others. A recent issue of the Financial Post lists 10 claim situations which are likely to provoke an audit reaction: 1. an office at home 2. car expenses, if you are an employee 3. deductions for tax shelters 4. business losses to cover employment income 5. significant interest expenses 6. large amounts of travel or convention expenses 7. being self-employed but being in receipt of a T-4 from an employer 8. large medical expenses, structural alterations to a house, or program of schooling for a child 9. large cultural donations “in kind” 10. sale of property owned at the end of 1971, where a capital gain exemption is claimed (a potential ‘valuation day’ value dispute). & T’ai Chi anyone? Trai Chi is available to all interested on Wednesdays from 4:45 pm to 6:15 pm (you can leave early if necessary). The sessions take place in Room 1315 with instructor Roxanne Chappell. If you have never tried T’ai Chi, this is your chance. Drop-ins are welcome for a minimal fee. The availability of this course depends on demand, so if you would like to ex- perience this ancient martial art first-hand, now is the time.
