Tent poles

After drying out the tent

when we come back from camping,
my least favourite job

is always getting the tent back in
the bag.

One time,

after a few attempts

I went to dad and told him I
couldn’t do it.

He must have seen an opportunity
to teach me about life.

For the next half hour,

I watched dad grunt and sweat

as he manipulated the tent in the bag.
He was spouting words of wisdom

as if he was reading them from a
self-help book.

“You'll never succeed if you don’t
try...”

“Tf at first you don’t succeed, try
again...”

“Failing is never trying...”

And when he finally did it he
looked at me,

feeling quite pleased with himself.
He said, “See!”

“Oh yeah, and what about the
poles?”

We started to laugh.

“Another lesson here Jay:

never take on a battle you can’t win.”
