Sports é Royals smash Spartans Hamish Knox In a match that should have been over before it started, the women’s volleyball team ad- vanced to the BCCAA finals with a convincing win over the Trinity Western Spartans. Ashley Todd started the game on a high note for Doug- las, angling the match’s first serve off a Spartans player for a deuce. DC was very fired up in the first few minutes of the game, flying all-over the floor for digs and blocks. Christine Bonish knocked Trinity Western back on its heels with a stunning jump serve, forcing TWU to call time with the Royals leading 8-3. Trinity called for time again behind 12- 5, but couldn't overcome the already overwhelming deficit, and fell 15-6. The Royals dominated the second game as well, using a very active offense and tight defense to jump out to an 8-4 lead. Trinity did begin a come- back late in the game when they began to figure out the DC offense. Two blockers met every Douglas attack, forcing Coach Sue Sharp to call time out leading 13-6, but with no kills going through the TWU wall. Whatever was said in the huddle worked, as DC came out and finished the match quickly, winning 15-7. While the first two games had the pace of a 100-metre dash, the third game of the match felt like the 10,000 metres. Harninder Reel kept the Spartans off balance with a great short serve attack, but Trinity stalemated her efforts by running effective “X's,” which kept the game from advancing past sideout after sideout. The taller Spartans team appeared to be getting the better of the Royals in the third game, going on a 4-0 mun after a DC time out to go up 10-6. The Douglas squad wouldn't give up, how- ever, showing their awesome ~ mental strength, they went on a 6-0 run of their own to go up 12-10. TWU kept the match interesting for a few more minutes, but they couldn't beat the Royals, who eventually took the game 15-13 and the match 3-0.
