da. douglas college Inter Office Memo Date: __December 16, 1982. DOUGLAS COLLEGE ARCHIVES To: From: Re: DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD W.L. DAY PRESIDENT'S REPORT External Matters - Municipal The New Wopenidieer Rotary Club honoured the College with a meeting in the cafeteria of the new campus, followed by a tour. Over 60 people were involved. Since that time we have been informed that the Rotary is intending to make a substantial scholarship available to the College. On November 25th, Mr. Laurie Wallace met with Mr. Doug Manning and Mayor elect Tom Baker of New Westminster, and myself, regarding the possibility of the Queen visiting New Westminster, and participating in the College's Opening Ceremonies in March. After a brief visit, the visitors agreed that it would be appropriate to have the Queen participate in the Opening. Subsequent to that visit and tentative agreement, it was found that the Queen would be able to spend only 15 minutes in New Westminster, and therefore her involvement would not be possible. On December 14, I met with Mr. R. Wright of the First Capital City Development Company in order to discuss a long term agreement for parking access to the existing and future waterfront parking facilities in New Westminster. In the foreseeable future, the parking available to Douglas College personnel and students under- _ neath the Campus will not be adequate for guaranteed parking, and we have an agreement in principle that we will have access to a certain number of spaces on the waterfront. Following discussions over the next two months, a proposal will be placed before the Board, in the form of a long term agreement. No news has been received recently from the City of New Westminster regarding our proposed agreement on Simcoe Park. We believe it is being discussed at the Committee level on City Council. External Matters - Education On December 3, Mr. iigan and I attended a seminar at Malaspina. College on ethical problems in educational administration. Because of the current climate of economic stress and the heightening of pressures on institutions, college administrators are exposed to a variety of problems in personal and professional ethics which are seldom discussed in a systematic fashion. The Malaspina seminar was superbly organized, and a very valuable experience.
