SHAUNA ROLSTON PERFORMS AT DOUGLAS COLLEGE The internationally acclaimed Canadian cellist Shauna Rolston will appear in a special New Westminster performance on Wednesday, March 4th, in the final showing of the Douglas College Great Canadian Musicians Series. Rolston, acclaimed as a virtuoso since the age of 12, will perform alongside her mother, Isobel Moore, pianist and assistant director of music at the Banff School of Fine Arts. All Eyes Upon Rolston Rolston's professional career began with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra before she reached her teen years. This natural Canadian talent was quickly billed a ‘child prodigy” and all eyes were upon her seemingly magical muscial abilities. After her 1983 U.S. debut, at the age of 16, Rolston was lauded with praise. “Her relationship with the instrument was completely natural,” wrote Edward Rothstein of the New York Times. “No physical movement was alien, and her breathing was intimately related to the music's.” She has toured across Europe and Asia, and everywhere her music has received nothing but the greatest applause. Rolston plays a small, 1824 French Chanot cello. This special Douglas College performance will present a rare oppor- tunity to hear one of the truly great artists in contemporary Canadian music. The performance will take place at the Douglas College Performance Theatre. The cost is $8 general and $4 for students and seniors. Reservations can be made by calling 520-5488. Band lea- der and trumpeter Robin Shier will be organizing several public perfor- mances for this group. For the more adventurous performer, Douglas College offers three Jazz Bands who play rock, jazz and other contemporary styles. These groups meet on various nights. The two advanced level jazz bands have collected a host of awards. Currently, the Jazz Band 2 is recording an album under the directorship of Blair Fisher. WRITING ADDED Popular demand is causing Douglas College to add two additional Creative Writing courses this spring. “The Craft of Writing Articles” and “Writing the Romance Novel” will be offered a second time, on Saturday, March 7. Both courses are designed for the novice writer hoping to make an entry into the sometimes lucrative world of publishing. The first is specifically for the freelance magazine aspirant, and the latter for the budding romance novelist. “Writing Articles” will look at the steps required to prepare a journalistic piece for the editor’s eyes. Instructor Carol- ine Jackson has been published na- tionally and is an accomplished writing teacher. Jackson will guide students through the steps of choosing a topic, prepar- ing cover and query letters as well as choosing the suitable market. The program will focus on the typical wri- ter’s day, and the view from the editor's desk. continued
