Education Council notes Several themes were clear in the results of last month’s INside readership survey. One was that, in these times of rapid change, people in general want to know more about what’s going on around the College and the decisions that affect them. One way we can do this is to give brief summaries of the meetings of Education Council, which we will do beginning this month. Composed of faculty, staff, students, and administrators, it meets once per month. The passing of provincial legislation (Bill 22) in January 1995 gave Education Council sole powers in relation to items of curriculum, as well as advisory powers to the Board in relation to other educational issues. As such, it’s one of the two governing bodies of the College (the other is the Board). The following are highlights of the February meeting. The full Education Council minutes are posted outside the Library each month. 4.1 Administrative Assistant Program Proposal It was moved and seconded that Education Council approve the proposed Administrative Assistant Program in Principle for implementation in September 1997. 5.1 Office for the Chair of Education Council The Chair informed members that effective Thursday, February 22, 1996, the Office of Chair of Council will be housed in the Administration area on the fourth floor. The President stated that the College must acknowledge that there are two governing bodies, the College Board and Education Council and that it was important that both the governing bodies be housed in an area which was accessible to all the College community and projected their importance. She felt that this arrangement will be more workable, being closer to the Senior Administration and the Council Secretariat. She welcomed the Chair to her new Office. 5.6 Report from the Standing Committee on Education Planning and Priorities The Chair asked members to refer this item to their DECs and representative groups for feedback and further discussion at the March 18, 1996, meeting of Education Council. 6.2 Responsibility for the Instructional Computing Area It was moved by Adrienne Peacock that the Department Science and Mathematics request that the responsibility for instructional computing be separated from Systems and Computing and be placed under direction of the Vice-President of Instruction. There was considerable discussion on the problems of purchase of equipment, service and expertise. It was suggested that academic and administrative computing areas be separate for effectiveness. Members agreed to a suggestion that at the March 18, 1996 meeting, both Peter Greenwood and Marsh Price be invited for further discussion on an alternative system. | The way the cookies crumbled... Alumni Week (Feb. 26-29) at Douglas College featured fun stuff like a Cookie Contest, Airplane Toss, and Chili Cookoff before wrapping up with the very successful Career Fair on February 29. Seen here are (I. to r.) Christine Unterthiner, Coreen Spring, and Marlene Lehti, who tickled peoples’ taste buds with various baked creations in the concourse on February 26. Kristen Conboy won first prize in the Cookie Contest, while Coreen Spring took second place; Dave Dalcanale won a bike from Cap’s in the Airplane Toss; Noel from the Cafeteria placed first in the carnivorous division of the Chili Cookoff, while Susan Schmidt took top honors in the vegetarian division.
