Lao-tzu (c.604c. 531 bc) August 6, 1993 The Douglas College Newsletter Public Lecture addresses new Queensborough Development On land slated for new residential devel- opment in the predominantly industrial Queensborough area, existing fields of grass and shrubs are being replaced by three meter high fields of silt and gravel. With the population predicted to swell to 6,000 within 10 years, the existing 1800 residents of this 100 year old community ar that their present way of life, like the and, will be treated with little regard by the new developments. As part of the effort to address these con- cerns, Val Schaefer, of Douglas College’s Institute of Urban Ecology, is leading a Real Estate Foundation funded study to de- termine the effects such growth will have on the Queensborough community as well as on the area’s ecology. "The challenge faced by residents and the City of New Westminster," says Schaefer, "is to retain those aspects of the community which are truly precious, while at the same time accomodating an inevitable increase in residential development." The study reveals a high degree of value for the rural nature of the community. 90% of Queensborough residents attrib- uted a "unique character" to their area, which they described as community ori- nted and slower paced than the rest of Greater Vancouver. Concerns raised include the increase in vehicle traffic, population density and eh Val Schaefer tests the water in Douglas College’s neighbour community of Queensborough. threats to the integrity of the land itself, particularly with regards to loss of wild- life habitat and agricultural land. When asked about investment in their community, the majority of residents (55%) chose single family houses, fol- lowed far behind by townhouses and condominiums (9%) and high rise apart- ments (3%). These and other concerns will be dis- played using maps, photos, and educational panels that will review resi- dential development in Queensborough at the Amelia Douglas Gallery at Douglas College from August 16th to September 10th, 1993. On September 3rd from 7:30 to 8:30pm, Schaefer will give a free public lecture that will examine growth management and green space issues relating to Queensborough development and review the results of the recent study. The displays and lecture will be rerun at the Queensborough Community Centre in the fall. For more information, call Val Schaefer at 527-5224 or Mona Aston at 527-5522. inside INside...
