Royals Secure Playoff Douglas College Athletics The Douglas College Royals were in Victoria this past weekend to face the fifth place Camosun College Chargers. A win on the island would secure the Royals a playoff berth in the upcoming BCCAA Provincial Championships at Okanagan College in Kelowna, BC. Even with the tough challenge ahead, the Royals would have to travel without middle Aleks Arnaut, who was unable to make the trip due to illness. In the first set of the match, the Royals started strong as they cruised through to an easy victory by a score of 25-16. In the second set, the Royals fell behind early as they were down 2-8 before fighting back to make it a game. Despite their tenacious effort, the Royals couldn’t overcome a host of unforced errors and lost the second set 22-25. With the match deadlocked a game a piece, the Royals put forth a redeeming performance as they dominated the Chargers in the third and forth set, 25-10 and 25-14 respectively to win the match. The Royals were lead behind Captain Kristin Knapp as she tallied 15 kills and 4 aces. Royals’ Libero, Brooke Hannela also added 15 digs in the win. On Saturday, the early afternoon game seem to suit the Royals well as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead, forcing the Chargers to call for an early time out. However, despite the efforts to slow the Royals roll, Douglas continued to clean up and never looked back as they defeated the Chargers in three sets straight, 25-14, 25- 14, 25-19. Again, Knapp led the team with 10 kills, while the league leader in digs (190) Brooke Hannela added another 20 digs to her weekend total of 35. Also pick- ing up for the absent Aleks Arnaut, Middle Blocker Nicole Schmidt recorded 4 stuff blocks. The wins have assured the Royals a trip to playoffs, but they have one more road trip to Cranbrook, BC where they will face the COTR Avalanche in two weeks. psports@gmail.com BROOKLYN PUB WATERFRONT LOUNGE 250 Columbia St. 604.517.2966 www.brooklyn.c a THURSDAY a.
