November 5, 2003 Sports ¢ the other press © Very Strong Weekend for Douglas Women’s Rugby Dave Pearcy OP Contributor After being idle for the past two weekends, the Douglas Premier girls were looking to atone for their sub par performance against UVic on October 4. The opponent this weekend was UBC, who were coming off a victory over the Vikettes in the Canada West University tournament. This was not to be a repeat of the UVic perform- ance, since Douglas scored early and often to contin- ue their dominance over the Point Grey squad. Douglas dominated possession from the start, and Jennifer Bailey (playing her first game in the fly-half position) scored at the five-minute mark. Scrumhalf Stacey Webber made it 10-0 three minutes later. The scoring parade continued as UBC seemed pow- erless to stop the hard running of the Douglas backs and forwards. Tries by Corinne Jacobsen, Vickie Dhillon, and Bailey again brought the score to 25-0. UBC came alive for a period and scored before half- time (25-5). The Thunderettes continued to play well for the first ten minutes after the restart and scored a converted try to come within 13 points. Douglas stepped up the tempo again and the visitors seemed to have nothing left. Tries from Tanya Leigh, Amber Cummings, and Laura Kinnear-Harmse completed the scoring along with three conversions by Cummings. On November 8, Douglas Premiere trav- els to the Island for a rematch with the Vikettes. The Second Division girls were also looking to recover from their shocking shut-out loss in Kamloops and rebounded with a solid performance up on the hill. The Douglas pack dominated the scrums and prevented SFU from mounting any con- sistent attack. Liz Madeley led the forwards as she ran hard into contact and was the first person at the tack- le almost every time. Again Douglas struck early, as Rikkilee Jones capped off a sustained period of pressure with a short run in to score. Douglas scored again after Candace Barry kicked through the SFU defensive alignment and followed up to tackle the SFU fullback right at the try line. Agnes Stefek was right there to scoop up the ball as it came loose then touch it down for anoth- er five points. Barry's convert gave Douglas a 12-0 lead. After an SFU player was sent off for ten minutes for dangerous play, second row Melanie Skolovy dove in for her first-ever try. The score was 17-0 at the half. Numerous substitutions were made to begin the sec- ond period of play, but Douglas kept in control and kept most of the play in the SFU end. The final score came as Jodie Lush broke through the defense and rambled for 40 metres before being dragged down close to the try line. Justine McCausland followed up and fought through two defenders to give Douglas the game at 22-0. Look for results from their game against Meralomas in the next issue. Classifieds.
