Wearing pink symbolizes that bullying of any kind will not be tolerated. Pink Shirt Day began in response to a simple act of kindness by two Grade 12 students from Nova Scotia. In 2007, a Grade 9 boy at David Shepherd and Travis Price’s high school was bullied and harassed for wearing a pink polo shirt on his first day of class. Instead of simply ignoring the problem, Shepherd and Price decided to take action—the next day the boys purchased 50 pink t-shirts for their classmates and began an email campaign dubbed “sea of pink.” The response was overwhelming: hundreds of students adorned in their finest 4 SURO Or Mere e Dh me eerie available for $5 at London Drugs, funds raised going directly to Boys and Girls clubs across Canada. The campus’ power went shortly after 9 Thursday morning. Morning classes were cancelled as BC Hydro crews worked to restore power. The campus was closed until 12:30 p.m. after which all classes, activities and events scheduled returned to normal. Students were kept updated via email, Facebook and Twitter. Over 100 entries were narrowed down to 10, for which 4,000 members of the Douglas College community voted online. The contestants were vying for their chance at three grand ‘prizes of $4000 in tuition credit each. The winners were announced at an awards ceremony April 6 at the New Westminster campus in room 1614.
