the other press Jordan Cripps _ Sports Editor With fear of sounding like a hyp- ocrite, given the article on page 21, I have been looking forward to the NHL playoffs for the past few weeks, wondering just when the regular season is going to end. As I write this, Vancouver has seven games left in their sea- son. Four of those games come against non-playoff teams, some- thing that should _ help Vancouver as they try to stay ahead of the surging Colorado Avalanche. It’s still too early to make play- off predictions since many of the first round match-ups have yet to be decided. The first round of playoffs, throughout the history of the NHL, has a number of upsets each season that are a direct result of who plays who in the first round. One of the most interesting possibilities is a meeting between Dallas and Minnesota. The two teams met recently in Minnesota and the atmosphere was electric. Fans of the old Minnesota North Stars voiced their displeasure toward the Texas version of the Stars, littering the ice with debris. Unruly? Yes, but there would certainly be even higher emotions if the two teams met in the playoffs. Dallas is a much better team than the upstart Minnesota Wild and would probably win the series quickly, but it would probably make for entertaining hockey. Although I think it would cause problems for Vancouver, a meeting with Colorado in the first round would be exciting given the history between the two teams. In all likelihood, if these two teams don't meet in the Sports http://otherpress.douglas.bc.ca the Corner first round, they'll meet later on in the playoffs. As far as Vancouver goes, I'd also like to see them play Edmonton. Edmonton is one of my favourite teams to watch because of the fast pace of their games and the absence of the trap. Vancouver plays a similar style and would match up well against the Oilers. The that Vancouver wants to avoid is Minnesota. The Wild are definitely the wildcard (pun intended) in these playoffs. Given the way that Jacques Lemaire has his team playing defensively, there won't be many opportunities for goals. Vancouver has a tendency to get frustrated against teams that rely on the trap. They try to get around the defensive pressure by making risky passes that turn team into chances for the opposition. I still think Vancouver would be able to defeat them, but the series wouldnt be as easy of a first round test as one might want. Another reason that Vancouver needs to avoid a first round series against Minnesota is that I don’t want to be subjected to watching Minnesota every other night. In the Eastern Conference, the series I would like to see is Ottawa against Toronto. This will not happen in the first round, barring a complete col- lapse by the Maple Leafs—a col- lapse that isn’t completely out of the realm of possibility given the serious lack of discipline on the team. These two teams simply don’t like each other. During the last meeting between the two teams, Darcy Tucker tried to March 26, 2003 change teams midway through the game, climbing onto the Senators bench. The Senators didnt want him and a melee ensued, complete with allega- tions of spitting. This would be like the series the Leafs had with the Islanders last year—not for the squeamish. I tend not to enjoy the Eastern Conference so much because the teams on that side of the draw have more of a tendency to employ the trap, making for a less exciting game. Boston and Philadelphia would also be a good pairing, because both teams are big and have the same weak- ness—goaltending. With any luck, the next two weeks of the regular season will go quickly, and the playoffs will be upon us before we know it.
