The free concerts return this Fall with a lineup of performers that includes faculty, alumni and guests from the Vancouver musical community. A list of these performers from the past 10 years reads like a Who's Who of Music in Vancouver. This year’s performances begin Music Department alumnus Loyva on September 8. Loyva is a founding member of the highly successful local group, P:ano, described in a recent review as “a young pop band at the top of its craft.” On September 15, Peter Zaenker will present a classical guitar recital. Zaenker studied at UBC with Douglas College faculty member Michael Strutt and has spent the last few years doing postgraduate work in Germany. Around the World with multi- instrumentalist Boris Sichon on September 22 will be an exciting cross- cultural, interdisciplinary feature. Internationally renowned concert pianist Robert Silverman plays music from his latest CD, Nighttime: Sound, sense, hues and moods, on September 29 to round out a month of marvelous music. The Vancouver Opera in the Schools brings Naomi’ Road to the College on October 6. This new opera about family, home and cross- cultural understanding is based on the novel by Joy Kogawa. On October 13, Sukha Trio, led by faculty member Jared Burrows (guitar) with Colin MacDonald (sax) and Clyde Reed (bass), plays improvised chamber music as well as compositions by its members. Music instructor and pianist Ellen Silverman will present a recital on October 20 with guest artist Bruce Henczel on percussion. Faculty guitarist Struct performs with guests on October 27 to wrap up the month. Bassoonist Jesse Read (Director of the UBC School of Music and the P:ano kicks off the Noon at New West concert series this September. The series resumes on November 17 with the Student Showcase Recitals. The concerts present a variety of soloists and ensembles and feature the best student performers. Additional recitals will be held on November 24 and December 1. All Noon at New West concerts start at 12:30 pm in the Performing Arts Theatre on most Thursdays throughout September to December, run about an hour and are presented free of charge, both to students and the general public. Mental illness education day offers hope Recovery from mental illness is not just a possibility — it’s the expectation in most cases. At the very least, individuals living with mental health issues can be assisted in achieving optimal health and happiness. The Douglas College Health and Safety Committee and Psychology Department, the Canadian Mental Health Association, Simon Fraser Branch, BC Schizophrenia Society, and Fraser Health, Fraser North, have partnered to host this exciting opportunity in celebration of Mental Illness Awareness Week and National Depression Screening Day. Their goal is to enhance the recognition of the signs and symptoms of depression, de-stigmatize mental illness, emphasize the importance of support and treatment options and highlight the hope of FECOVETY. This education day will be held at the David Lam Campus and will feature free depression screening, information booths panel discussions, a one-act play and more. Fully Loaded Orientation Week happening now Orientation will take place from September 6-9 and will feature various activities for both new and current students. This event will emphasize involvement in campus life and promote unity within Douglas College. Hosted by the New Westminster Lawn Bowling Club, this fun event raises money for bursaries for Douglas College students. No previous lawn bowling experience is required — each four-person team gets a personal coach. Open to all ages, the tournament features prizes for the best costumes, the most money raised and best spirit of the day. You can enter a team or pledge participating colleagues to raise money. Door prizes abound and there’s a raffle for $500 shopping spree at Royal City Centre, a $400 gift certificate from Millers Jewelers and a DVD player. Teams will enjoy a pre-tournament lunch and a post-tournament barbecue. Registration at 11:30am, lunch at noon, tournament starts at 12:45pm. That's what’s on the menu during the 8th Annual “Class Act” Wine Fest, to be held Thursday, November 17, 7 - 9:30pm at the Executive Inn in Coquitlam. Graduation application deadline approaches The Registrar's Office is asking faculty to please remind all students that the deadline to submit an application for the January, 2006 Graduation is September 23, 2005. All students completing their graduation requirements by the end of the Fall 2005 semester must submit an application to the Registrar's Office by the deadline. Applications are available at the Registrar's Office or can be printed from the Registrar's Office Web site. Student Services, Library hold open houses Prizes, food and fun activities will be on offer when Student Services and the Library hold their Open Houses this month. The joint festivities will be held September 21 at the New Westminster Campus and September 22 at the David Lam Campus, 9:30am-3pm both days. There'll be booths in the concourse and atrium and students are encouraged visit all the areas in Student Services including Counseling, Financial Aid, the Learning Centres, Centre for Student with Disabilities, First Nations and the Women’s Centre.
