The Continuing Education Open House attracted over 100 visitors who checked out courses covering everything from Travel Counsellor Training and Health Sciences to Coaching and Language, Literature and the Performing Arts. Each year over 20,000 people from all over the Lower Mainland take Continuing Education programs at the College, enrolling in courses, seminars and workshops, attending conferences and events or completing part-time certificate programs. If you're interested in finding out more about the College's Continuing Education offerings, booklets are available in room 4011 and 2700, or see their Web site at www.douglas.bc.ca and choose Departments, and then Continuing Education. Another Open House is planned for January, so watch for notices announcing the date and time. Transfer TIPS Handbook available British Columbia TIPS (Transfer Information for Post- Secondary Success), a user-friendly handbook outlining how students can transfer credits between BC post secondary institutions, was released September 13 by the BC Council on Admissions and Transfer (BCCAT). The handbook includes tips, student quotes, scenarios, a personal plan and checklist. “Copies of TIPS are available to students free of charge,” said Frank Gelin, executive director of BCCAT. “The need for such a handbook has been recognized for some time. We encourage students to read TIPS to better prepare themselves for the world of post-secondary education, and to help them to reach their academic goals.” Copies of TIPS are available at the Registrar's Office at all campuses, or on the BCCAT Web site at www.bccat.bc.ca. TeleReg for College Employees Winter 2000 registration for College employees starts in November. To receive priority registration, please be sure you fit into one of the following categories: 1. If you attended classes in the Fall semester: Call the Registrar's Office at local 5524, identify yourself as a College employee planning to register for the Winter semester. 2. If you are a College employee with a student number and you did not attend classes in the Fall semester: Complete an Application for Readmission form to reactivate your student number. (Be sure to identify yourself as a College employee when reapplying.) 3. Ifyou are a College employee without a student number: Complete an Application for Admission form and return it to the Registrar's Office as soon as possible. Be sure to identify yourself as a College employee when applying. You must do this before October 25th to receive priority registration. If you are in doubt as to the fee exemptions you qualify for as a College employee, please check with the Personnel Office. Orientation Fair another success First Nations Centre student assistant David DeCoine (left) stands with Orientation/ Graduation Coordinator Mary Whorley (right) at the first-place winning First Nations Student Services table during Orientation Fair, held September 9 at the New Westminster Campus. “The information tables in the concourse were judged by VPs Karen Maynes and Al Atkinson,” says Whorley. “First Nations won first prize for their beautiful and informative display, as well as food samples such as bannock and salmon.” Cooperative Education claimed second place and the Other Press took third. In addition to the competition in the concourse, field bases were invited to participate in a separate competition and prepare their areas to welcome the students for the start of the new school year. The judging committee consisted of VP Karen Maynes, Student Society's Amanda Wheeler and Administration’s Maureen McGee. Language, Literature and Performing Arts won first prize, Child, Family and Community Studies took second and honourable mention went to Student Services and ESL/ DVST. At Thomas Haney, the winners of the Best Decorated Table contest were: Centre 2000 (first place), Co-op Education (second place) and the Learning Centre (third place). At the David Lam Campus, the winners were: Dispensing Optician (first), Academic Advising (second) and FB Co-op Education (third),
