INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / OCTOBER 3, 1989 Educational Leave continued from page 8 proof of acceptance to the program. Completed and proposed course- work should be included. It is strongly advised that ap- plicants canvas their immediate col- leagues and administrators, as well as any other college personnel, to secure support for their proposals. Applicants should try to obtain written support which can be enclosed with the application form — although communiques of sup- port which arrive after receipt of this form will still be accepted by the Committee. Applicants should familiarize themselves with Article 12 of the Collective Agreement as well as the President’s memorandum indicat- ing current development priorities for the College. The Interviews Each applicant is granted an in- terview to permit the committee to address specific matters arising from each application. The format of these interviews is a matter for each year’s committee to decide on but usually the interviews are about thirty minutes long. A list of interview questions is designed to enable the applicant to update the Committee on new in- formation, to clarify further details of the proposal, and to respond to member's concerns regarding the merits of the proposal. A list of questions is forwarded to the ap- plicants before the interview and may include specific questions regarding each application. The Committee’s Guldelines Aside from the considerations outlined in the Collective Agree- ment, the Committee draws up a series of guidelines for adjudicating applicants. The guidelines prepared by last year’s Committee are enclosed. Committee’s Evaluation The following statements are intended as general advice about the factors that influence the Committee’s evaluation of a proposal. 1. The Committee is pri concerned with establishing that each application is: ~ Realistic — the proposed activities can be achieved within the timelines proposed. - Clear — the details of the proposal are well planned and well articulated. - Approvable — the value of the proposal to the applicants and the college community can be ascertained. 2. The Committee will concern itself with evaluating the application as it is presented, rather than as it could be presented. While the Committee can and will offer appropriate suggestions for revision to initial applications, the Committee will not recommend any applications that appear to still require extensive revisions once the interviews have been completed. 3. Since members of the Committee cannot be expected to have expertise in the subject area of every proposal, the Committee will need full explanations of the technical aspects of the proposal. Applicants should appreciate that Educational Leave is not regarded at Douglas College as a “perk” to be granted frivolously, neither is ita “reward” for past ser- vices rendered. Each application is judged strictly on its communi- cated merits. The Reporting Back equirement All faculty who receive educa- tional leave are required to submit a report of the accomplishments of the period of leave as soon as pos- sible upon their return. REPORTING GUIDELINES 1. All faculty granted educational leave are required to submit a formal report to the College President within 2 months of completion of their leave period. 2. The report will present both a summary of the activities conducted during the period of leave, and an analysis of the results that were accomplished. 3. The report will be both: a) A printed report, plus summary, in the form of a written monograph, and b) An open seminar presented to the College community. 4. Inall cases, a written summary will be published in the INSIDER (Douglas College’s Newsletter). 5. The College President shall determine whether or not the educational leave recipient has fulfilled his/her contract. The College President may consult with the Educational Leave Committee for assistance in determining whether the original purpose and objectives of the leave have been fulfilled. 6. In all cases, copies of the final report will be maintained in the Douglas College Library. Educational Leave Committee (Revised March 1988) GUIDELINES FOR ADJUDICATING EDUCATIONAL LEAVE REQUESTS 1.
