THE POTTLE AWARD REQUEST FOR SUBMISSIONS Introduction: In 1984, Herbert L. and Muriel E. Pottle established an award toenhance Canadian citizenshipin'"a global village". Both Dr. and Mrs. Pottle have a long-standing interest in the development of women and in granting the award wish to promote opportunities for women for personal development. The recipient of the award will be working towards strengthening the role of women in building asense of community. The donors are deeply impressed by the manner in which the YWCA of Canada fulfills its responsi- bilities and have invited the Ottawa Young Men's and Young Women’s Christian Association to act as their agent in bringing the award to the notice of young Canadians and in receiving and assessing applications for the award. Criteria: i The Ottawa YM-YWCA thus invites proposals from applicants who are Canadian citizens under 30 years of age. Their employment or voluntary work should give: a) evidence of a religious commit- ment, and b) demonstrated community interest in improving the quality of life for women at the local, national and international levels. The applicant will have completed post-secondary education, or have the capability to complete such studies and will present evidence of quality of writing inafield of continuing human interest. One award of $5,000 will be granted annually. It should be directed towards defraying the costs of travel, programme materials and subsistence for the duration of away-from-home stays. No specific area of study has been set for the applicants who propose and justify their own programme. In addition to previously stated criteria, the Selection Committee will use the following guidelines: a) The specific need which can be satisfied best by the proposed programme, b) The value of the related itinerary, c) The nature of the stated plans for utilization of acquired knowledge upon the completion of the programme. Proposal: Applicants should ensure that their proposals are practicable within the suggested time frame of 6-12 months. Programmes of an international nature are preferred. The successful applicant will be expected to submit to the donors, via the Ottawa YM-YWCA, a report on their work. Proposals should describe the intended project fully, including objectives, an operational plan, and proposed follow-up endeavours in Canada. A budget should describe the cost of each component. Information should also be included on relevant activities currently being pursued by the applicant and why application is being made. A curriculum vitae and references should be included. Time Frame: a) Proposals must be received by the Ottawa YM-YWCA by August 31st and earlier if possible. b) By October 15, the Ottawa YM-YWCA will select and recommend recipients to the donors. c) Thedonors will make the final selection. The recipient must take up the award any time within twelve months of selection. d) Granting of the first award — October 15, 1985. Applicants should submit their proposals to the office below.
